View Full Version : Firefox, Anyone?

I'm trying to find where Firefox caches their Temporary Internet Files (like the tut videos). Anyone out there able to enlighten me? I've looked in what seems to be the logical places...

What is your system? Win or Macintosh?

Hi Ray-
Windows.
Wendy, et. al, I used to be all Mac, all the time, though! In a perfect world, I still would be! Our school district went to Windows, though, and thus...

Look for a Proflies sub folder, some where on your hard drive. It's part of the cache folder on the Mac.

I tried viewing a tutorial in firefox. I found the cache easily enough, but there was nothing there that would open with quicktime.

Files are stored without an extension. If you view a video, then it'll be the last file accessed. Sort your folder accordingly, add .MOV to the latest file (sometimes, the file just before this one, check the size as well) and you'll be able to view the video in Quicktime.

For me it just wasn't there...no big file, nothing that even looked like it might be right.
I am ok with IE, I find them no problem, but initially I had to increase my IE cache size or it wouldn't keep them either.

Well.. I'm no expert at hacking, so I can't explain why they weren't there. I just know, on Mac, the cache contains everything. You simply need to sort by date created (or last accessed) and there you have it.

Well, I think I'm with Gary. Found the folder you were referring to, Gary, and same thing: nothing there big enough to be a .mov file. As an experiment, I downloaded a movie in both Firefox and IE. I found it no problem in the IE cache, but, like you, nothing in the Firefox. I also did a system-wide search for the movie title as it appeared in the IE cache, and it only turned up the IE cache copy. Could it be Firefox doesn't cache video like that?
Hmmm...

Makes me yearn for my Mac days, Ray... :?

From what I saw, and I could be wrong, Firefox changes the name of certain files it receives.
My suggestion would be to open Windows Explorer, get to the cache folder. Then, in Firefox, browse to your video supplying site. Erase FireFox cache, then click on Play. The next file to appear is likely the video.
Unless the website has made sure Quicktime would not cache the movie (if it's possible)

Ray,
I would get a Mac now but, this machine is only 6 months old. When it's time to replace it though, I already know what I want to do. Get a Mac.

My wife would love a Mac. We're both pretty frugal, though, and the Dell laptop I have for work is pretty loaded, and works great. Plus, it's what I need for work, so we just use that.
Plus, if I got her a Mac and introduced her to PSE, I may never see her again...
She was looking over my shoulder last night while I was watching a tut video, and she immediately recognized the danger of learning more... :)
