Hi guys,

First, thanks for all the people here who help people like me (newb), you really are appreciated!

I read a while back in a tutorial that it wasn't good to feed premiere elements MPEG2's. It was better to convert your home movies to DV-AVI's, save to your hard drive, and then import those to PE.

That is what I am trying to do. I have a bunch of home movies on DVD I want to edit and export to DVD. I downloaded 2 different converters to convert my MPEG2's to DV-AVI, because one wouldn't work. The first was MPEG Virtual Dub and the second was Streamclip.

One won't work (streamclip) and the other keeps saying "couldn't locate decompressor" for my audio stream when I save as DVI (full processing).

In GSPOT, it tells me my audio is AC3 and that I have the codecs installed, but they aren't available in VDUB. I have tried downloading codecs (LAME and ACMAC3) but they won't install, I think this has to do with me having a 64 bit system.

So if ANYONE knows of a way to convert home movie dvd VOB files into AVI files on a 64-bit Vista system, please point me in the right direction. I really want to get involved in this new hobby, but right now I am at a standstill, and I haven't even started

Again Thank you all for your help......

LOU

MPEGStreamclip is the way to go on a 32 bit operating system. Can you switch from 64 bit to 32 bit compatibility mode when using that software? MPEGStreamclip requires either:
Quicktime + Apple’s MPEG2 Playback Component (have to purchase component from Apple)
Or
Quicktime Alternative 1.81 (free and comes with Playback Component) (requires complete removal of Quicktime beforehand).
Neither of these supports Vista 64. So, installing the latest version of Quicktime in a 64 bit OS has problems.

This is the party line from an Adobe TechNote on Premiere Elements (which is a 32 bit application) and the 64 bit and 32 bit issue.

You say that you have tried to use VirtualDub software. Have you tried the version for 64 bit as described in the following link?

In my travels around the Internet, I came across this thread on VOBs and Command Prompt. Have you seen this before?

I have not tried it, but will give this a try when I get a chance. If you try it first, let me know how it worked out.

I do not have any hands on experience with the 64 bit environment. We can continue exchanging ideas on this issue, but another route that you might try is:

Premiere Elements User to User Forum at Adobe (http://www.adobe.com (http://www.adobe.com/)). It is a good place to check out. You do not have to register to read the posts, but you do have to register to ask a question. But the process is free of charge.
