View Full Version : Why half side of photo is darker?

I took a picture and it looks a little bizarre: half of it - the left - is lighter than the right side of the picture:

What could be the cause and what I can do to make it better?
I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT

Hmmm I have never seen that before, it could be from where you took the picture and the lighting of pictures was taken.
You could fix it by making the dark part a rectangular selection then going to....
 Enhance
 adjust lighting
 levels
And mess around with the Levels a little bit.
Or
 Enhance
 Adjust Lighting
 Brightness Contrast..

Hi ...
Well that is an odd one and I really have no idea what could have caused.
It you do try correcting it using the suggestions Theomas made then when you have made the selection do Select>Feather (probably 50, 60 or wven higher) .. that way the transistion will be smoother :)

I have a guess as to how it happened. I have the same camera you do. Did you use the onboard flash? Trying to shoot a vertical photo, if I don't hold the camera correctly, my hand blocks some of the flash and I get shadows on my photos. I will try to find one to post here but that's my guess.

I suspect you were standing near a piece of furniture, doorway, person, or fat fingered the flash... I've done that a few times.

It is definately the light source/shadow that caused it. If it was the camera itself, the line on the keyboard would line up with tth line on the face.

It is so bizarre but I guess that maybe not only one cause but the many because when I shot the picture above and the second one, the difference was about the angle of shot - zoom nearer in the right pic . But, if, how to explain that the shadow disappears when I shot at more right angle? Why the shadow does not increase toward the left of the picture if it is caused by the object near me at my front right? Even the zooming effect, the distance is still the same for my flash (onboard one) and the light is still stopped by the same object:

Thanks Wendy and Thomas, I will try. :)

HI
Some zooms have a way, of getting in the way of the flash. I depends on the amount of zoom or non zoom, the angle.
There is another post around, that was taken of some halloweeners, that had a big dark area caused by the lens and the zoom. The shadow isn't the same as yours but many factors could affect that.

This is interesting. Some things to think about. Next time, I will clean my desk before taking a picture of people working in front of me! :)

That's awesome! so smooth and soft. Lovely!
I tried myself but at the end, as I couldn't make it right, I do something else but now I am shy to show it

There had to be some obvious obstruction or other lighting influence in the picture. It just seems odd....
Angle is definitely different.

Of course they knew it! I sent it to them by e-mail. This mom told me that what was great was to have not make an effort to be costumed at the Halloween's day! But now, she tells me that I have to pay :P a "little damage fees" :P to her in printing for her my "Girls are born in flowers" (picture of the week 8) ). The baby girl on the picture is the same baby but at little younger age.
:D
I am happy that you like this little joke, Wendy and Gary. Thanks for your comments!
