Be Creative Week #26

This week’s tutorial ‘Borders in under a minute’ is a video tut from Corey Barker which is showing at Planet Photoshop. If you have a Wacom tablet, then use your Wacom in this one, but you can use the mouse instead if you don't have a Wacom. Here’s the link ……..

http://www.planetphotoshop.com/borders-under-a-minute.html (http://www.planetphotoshop.com/borders-under-a-minute.html)

This one is good for learning how to make a clipping group.

Again this tut uses a layer mask, however if you prefer not to, then you can get by without it and make adjustments to your layer filled with black.
So in case you need a layer mask here is the link to Grant’s tools and instructions for adding the tools to PSE.
http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/Files.html (http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/Files.html)

Notes: for PSE
Image size is up to you, I made my new document the same size as the image I would be using so that I wouldn’t need to transform the size, which worked well until I used a cropped image. :o

In PSE your drop shadow will be found in the layers style palette.

Please try it out, have fun, season to taste and do any extras you like along the way and as always I look forward to seeing your images.

BTW it took me considerably longer than a minute to create mine, but if I saved the border file then I could apply it to another image in less than minute. :D

Here's my first one.......actually I find squiggling on the tablet quite a challenge in itself :o (note to self to use tablet more), and as I said, it did take me more than a minute for the first one........

The picture was taken a couple of Sundays ago, when I visited Stokesay Castle, which there is a picture of on my 'Glimpses through the Mashrabeya' (http://glimpsesthroughthemashrabeya.blogspot.com/2008/05/stokesay-castle.html)blog

Started by scribbling around with the Wacom and then did some more playing around. I did the scribbling on a blank layer above the image because you can then see what you're scribbling around which I found was a bit easier. If you have PSE6 you can use Refine Edge on the Scribble that lets you see what it will look like and you can make some adjustments like feather to the edge. I also had to mess with the background layer, put a gradient on it and apply some layer styles and some patterns. One thing I did find was that Corey I think put the drop shadow on the image layer - when I tried it I couldn't see anything so I put it on the black frame layer instead and then it showed - so not sure if I was seeing it right in the video.

That's the first one. The second one I did by making just a rectangle filled with black and then instead of scribbling (I'm a lousy scribbler :D) I used filters like Sprayed Strokes and Angled Strokes to make the frame edge. And then a Danlewin-gold style on the background. Lots of possibilities. Thanks Lisa and Corey :)

Wow, I like his tutorial. It was really easy and I can change the color of the border to suit me. Here is a geranium that I had once.

I tried to keep it under a minute, but it ended up closer to ten. Regardless, I learned a new technique. Thanks, Lisa.

I'm having a frustration attack!! I have listened and relistened to the tut over and over and tried to do it just as many times. First of all when I scribble the rectangle it turns into a circle and when I fill it it is darker in the middle and moves out to soft edges. Then when I try to add the picture I get either the background or the picture and I can't put them together. So...I need help please!! The tut says it is "quick, fun and easy" but at this point I'm not having fun!!

Thanks.

I liked this one. The scribbling was fun, except I think I got a bit
carried away. Great stress reliver! :)

I finally got to play! Here are my sunflowers (http://www.elementsvillage.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=4609&c=5). I used an eraser brush to do the additional strokes. Added a dropshadow and a bevel.

Here's mine:

Rather than a layer style I used the 'raise a picture from it's background' method then applied a blur to the background and also desaturated it a tad.

Thanks Lisa - a nice easy one and fun!:)
