I am a newbie and am following this step by step.
Love these podcasts!

When I get to the step to add the drop shadow to the layer I select the second button on effects but when I hover over the effects selection area I get the circle with the line through it. I believe this to mean there are non available currently.

What am I missing that wont allow them to be selectable?

Just check that you are not on the background layer ...

Found the problem....
To create a more secure mac I load programs under an ADMIN account and then use a limited user account daily.
PSE only works with ADMIN level user access.

I have found a work around here that works.
