Some time back Byron suggested that 'Kitsch' would be a fun theme. I think so too. If you're unsure of the word, the Wikipedia definition is here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitsch).

The fine print:
Everyone is invited to participate.
Because the purpose of the weekly theme is to get us more familiar with our cameras and to sharpen our photographic skills, entries should be taken during the week of the theme.
Photoshopping is allowed.
To make this thread more manageable to view, please post only your entries in this thread. Post your comments in the accompanying 'comment' thread (http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37001).
Be creative and have fun!

I guess I will go first. We have to be careful here since one man's kitsch is another's treasure.
Since it is well-known that I am a big Alabama fan, I often get gifts from well-meaning students and friends. This one is OK, however, because I really like kitschy bird houses.

I'm surrounded by kitsch. I live in kitsch. I never dreamed there would be a photo theme devoted to the subject, and I have already used up some of my favorites in past themes. So, for something new I offer some Simpson's memorabilia. I don't really watch the show anymore so I'm thinking about opening the cereal. The expiration date is September 2002, so it should still be good, right?
This is my chrome dinette table too, which is kitschy itself.

Disclaimer: The photo hereby submitted does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the submitter as being "kitsch" and shall, therefore, not be held responsible for unceremoniously stepping on anyone's toes or insulting anyone's personal taste! I, personally, think it's beautiful! ;)
This is a "gift" that has traveled around our office for many years under the guise of being an award or heart-felt present. But for some reason, it is always graciously refused and returned to the office storage room, to await the next unsuspecting victim, er... I mean... recipient! We think it's an urn or hanging vase of some sort in which to hold dried flowers?

KITSCH - Well, I chose the rooster lamp. This lamp belonged to my grandmother and now resides "proudly" in my dining room. LOL I think it's kinda neat. Although, I have never been able to find a suitable shade for it.

Nothing says "Kitsch" like a novelty necktie... and I've got 'em!!
I think everyone will recognize "the boys" on the left. And I'm not certain whether Santa is trolling for the gifts, or using them as bait.
The center piece is one of which I am especially proud... my mom sent away for it from an ad in some magazine or other. If you tilt your head to the left, you can see the pattern is my name in script, and then reflected.
Try not to be jealous!! :p

Yeah - I had time to play this week! How about a "geeky beek" for a perfect example of "kitsch". I actually have 2 of these wacky birds!

We'll call this vase kitschy in keeping with the theme, garish is the word I'd use. Still in all, can't seem to bring myself to throw it out! It's marked as being made in Italy but someone from the U.S. once suggested it might have been a give-away from Dennys.

As much as I love my brother & as much as I like dragons when he gave me this for Christmas las year I thought to myself.."oooh a dragon! ...a plastic dragon with a light up base & a hanging plastic crystal all on a Celtic cross" Oh happy day! Oh where oh where shall I display this wonderful piece of art? Ok it's not that bad but I really do not keep any kitschy stuff in my home if I can help it:rolleyes:
Enjoy.

Best I could do this week. Not sure where this came from but it fitted my definition. I could make it worse by posting a video with a soundtrack of what happens when you press the button on her left arm. It was a very quick pic because a few seconds later the cat started ripping her left ear apart which is probably a suitable fate ..... :)

My naked lady nutcracker is kitsch. She broke her pelvis a few years ago cracking open crab legs, so she pretty much just serves as a conversation piece.

Well folks... I've been holding this one out until the final hours of the theme window. I think you'll see why. ;)
For your kitsch-viewing pleasure, I present The Clock.
It is a fine example of the cast resin arts - lovely in every detail - from the dilapidated windmill to the beautifully-sculpted boulders which provide a foundation for the rest of the 20-inch masterpiece.
The cow and her calf have climbed the rocky base of the old windmill, presumably to snack on the tasty flowers which grow on the rotting timbers. Inexplicably, the calf has become encased in .....a SNOWGLOBE!!! The cow seems only mildly concerned about the calf's predicament, and the calf itself doesn't seem to be a bit worried. We are left to ponder the meaning of it all...
Oh, yes -- the globe actually has "snow" in it. I guess the makers of the thing anticipated that you would actually pick up the whole clock and shake it to make it snow on the calf.
I will accept sealed bids for the next couple of days... :p
