Be Creative Week #25
This week’s tutorial ‘Creating Reflections’ is from Panos FX and as well as producing a great result is really good for getting to grips with changing the canvas size and rotating and flipping layers.
http://www.panosfx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=117&Itemid=29 (http://www.panosfx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=117&Itemid=29)
You will need to use a layer mask again, here is the link for Grant’s tools (and instructions)
http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/Files.html (http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/Files.html)
Notes: for PSE
Step 5 Image> resize > canvas size
Note that the relative box is unchecked and the position of the anchor.
Step 9 Image > rotate and then make sure you flip LAYER horizontal and LAYER 180 (otherwise the whole document will flip)
It might help to switch off visibility on the ‘photo’ layer to see this (then switch back on to see both images).
Step 12 ctrl click the new layer icon to get the new blank layer underneath the active layer.
I found the ripple was hard to see if I tried to be subtle, but just experiment and see what you get.
Please try it out, have fun and as always I look forward to seeing your images. :)

Maybe not the best picture to try it with as it started with sky and water but as I was there last weekend and it was a picture I wondered what to do with I gave it a try. Thanks Lisa (and Panos).

I'm in New Mexico and my laptop doesn't have my car images:eek:. This was taken Tuesday. LW Jan is stepping out of our rental car into the arid land of the Turquoise Trail .... with a flood hot on her heels of course!

Edit: I'm sure the flood won't last ... I just noticed the slant of the horizon.:o

I am a newbie to Elements and have been spending a lot of time getting familiar with the forum. When I purchased Elements 6.0 I never had any idea of the different things that can be done. I am totally in awe of your images here. They are incredible!! I'm sure it will be a long time before I can even figure out how to do this!!

Hi Mary Lou,
Welcome to the Village and pleased to have you join us.
One of the best ways to learn PSE is to jump right in there with the Challenges, if you need help with anything, just say and there is always someone around who can give advice.
Here is a link to the Be Creative Challenges weeks 1 -20, they never finish, so please feel free to have a go at any that you like.

Also do have a go at the weekly crop challenge and Bill's weekly photo theme, these are all in the Challenges and Contests area of the forum.

Great tutorial Lisa.
An image from this tutorial could be passed off as an original image to someone who didn't know the magic of photo-shopping.

The original road was dry. The water & the reflection were created digitally in Photoshop.

This is my contribution. What is a good way to dirty up the line between the two pictures so it is not so noticeable?

But, it just doesn't look realistic. Maybe too much ripple? Fun experiment anyway.

PS: I'm afraid I didn't understand the instructions how to use Grant's tools. So I put a layer graduated from a white top to a black bottom in between the photo and its reflection and set its blend mode to multiply. It looks like I have used Grant's tools.

I mostly followed directions- a pretty convincing ripple can come from using sprayed strokes. Doubling up on challenges here - I can't tell if this reflection is realistic.
