View Full Version : Writing to tape: abort in the middle

A new problem! Instead of burning to DVD, I now write my finished projects to DV-tape, for quality's sake. I let the camera record via 'Share', and 'record to tape'. The window shows correct data for the start- and end-time codes, but the recording stops somewhere in the middle. Whats is going wrong?

Unfortunately I do not have any hands on experience with Export to Tape feature of Premiere Elements 4. However............
I need to do some homework on this. But this is one speculation...
In the Export to Tape Dialog, there should be an option "Abort after ___ Dropped Frames". How did you set that up, low/medium/high number? Also, there should be another option "Report Dropped Frames". Are you getting any dropped frame messages? Also, do you have the speed of your connection set all the way up?
I am thinking that maybe your transfer is too slow, resulting in dropped frames, which is triggering the "Abort after x Dropped Frames".
I will look into this an see what reports are out there on this problem. I did find the following over at the Premiere Elements User to User Forum at Adobe:

Here is an additional link that I have found:

Export to tape…won’t

Uninstalling/reinstalling Premiere Elements 4 seemed to resolve the issue in this one circumstance. It was interesting to note that it was happening in Premiere Elements 4, not in Premiere Elements 3 or 2. I do not believe this can be classified as a cure all for all, but it is interesting.

Thanks again for the replies. I checked the links but none of them brought a solution. In the meantime, I've discovered what the problem is. When exporting to DV-tape, the project first has te be rendered completely. Now rendering is only done for the part of the project that is indicated in the upper part of the timeline with a grey line. This grey line can be pulled towards the right of the timeline. If I do this, and stretch the grey line all the way to the end of the project (and preferably a little further), the whole project is redered AND subsequently recorded to the tape. The problem with EL4 is the very incomplete manual. In the chapter 'recording to tape', it never metions antything about this grey line. Hope there'll be a better instruction book on EL4 soon!
I appreciate the fast replies that one gets on this forum!

Glad that you resolved the issue, and thank you for letting us know the outcome.
It sounds like you are referring to the "Work Area Bar" of the Timeline. We have run into similar matters when Exporting to DV AVI via File Menu/Export/Movie.
In that Work Area Bar, there should be two tabs. One at 0 time and one at the end of your Timeline content. The settings in that DV AVI Export include one for range where you can designate Entire Timeline or Work Area Bar. If Work Area Bar, you can set the tabs on the Timeline and, then in the Export settings, designate Work Area Bar for the export of the content between the two tabs of the Work Area Area of the Timeline.
So, sometimes this can be used to your advantage.
Congratulations on a good job of troubleshooting. Continued success.
