Hi everyone!
I just wanted to share this tutorial link with you all, for creating out of bounds (OOB) images with elements.
The actual tutorial can be found here in my free PDF photography magazine: http://www.photographybb.com/magazine
If you would like to see some examples, here's one elements user who's really got the hang of it: http://www.photographybb.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2092
Scroll down to see some embedded examples, and page 2 has some really cool examples too.
Have fun! Post your creations here!

My version. I made it a while ago, not following this tut, but it's still the same concept. Elements' lack of a pen tool left some imperfections on the car...

Hi ...
Please will you just put thumbnails in the threads ... large images cause all sorts of problems for people on dial up.
If there is a clickable thumbnail it means that people who want to view a larger image can do just that ... and our members who are using dial up don't have to wait a long while the images load into the thread. This really slows things down for them ...

Hi Wendy,
useing Dave Cross's (Wendy's) tut with the surfer, i get to the point
where he discards the black filled layer, he then say's to duplicate the
background, you then see the surfer complete leaping out of the cropped background, my screen shows another complete background,
what stage am i missing. I'm on Elem 5 Windows X.P.

Hi ...
Once you have thrown away the black layer you still have your selection on screen.
Just click on the Background Layer and do Edit>Copy then Edit>Paste and your layers palette should then look like Dave's. If you next create the new white layer like Dave did ... you should then get the same result :)

Hi Norm ...
First resize your image using "save for web"
Set the longest side to 750 pixels and click on Apply
then adjust the quality slider until the image is around 150K.
and save it with a new name.
then go to
http://www.pixentral.com/index.php
Follow the instructions on the site and then when your image is uploaded copy the URL from below the image (where it says forum) and paste it into a message here :)

WOW! You guys/girls are awesome! Love the examples so far, and I look forward to seeing more.
Norm, that's pretty cool! Can't wait to see some more from you.
One question that was posted on my forum, is how to change the frame color after the fact. The simplest way would be to use the paintbucket tool, and just fill the frame (on your frame layer) to a different colour.
Great job everyone! There's an advanced OOB technique coming in the next issue of the magazine, which releases every second tuesday of the month (so May 13th). We've also got a great volunteer who'll be adding some Elements specific tutorials too.
Thank you all for your kind comments on the magazine and the website. Let's get back to OOB'ing!! :)

having a bit of an issue with the gradient step. using PSE5, downloaded the layermask. everything goes well until this step. it says to apply the gradient to the new layer, layer 2, but you won't see the a change. but my whole picture changes depending ont he gradient selected. even though the subject is higher tham the gradient layer it affects it? i must be doing something not quite right. of course i am a newb with mask and gradients.
did some playing and erasing of the gradient layer to get the color back in the pic. i didn't take a while and clean the edges real well just because i ws just trying it out to see how it went so i'm not worrie about that.
here's what i got.

*EDIT* Sorry, is there anyway to post thumbnails of images in our galleries, or do I have to re-upload them to another photo hosting site like photobucket to do it?
A few of mine.
First one made from an image off google and was my first attempt:

Second one is done with a stencil which I also used photoshop elements to make:

Well this is my first shot at this but did discover one thing that may help. When you go to do the close masking use a small soft edge brush. It seems to make the outer areas look a bit better for me anyway.

I used a tut by Gabrielle. I'm sort of happy with it. Must try for a better picture of Little John and his 'fish' to work on. LJ is the first cat I ever had (from among dozens) who plays fetch with his 'fish', or what is left of it. He carries it all around and talks to it, a sound sort of a cross between a murmur and a purr. When he brings it to me to be thrown he always gets my attention with his 'talk'.

Hi folks, I'm trying to create my own OOB like all the other stunning ones I've seen posted here. I'm using the tutorial in the Photography BB online magazine. I'm at the step where you use the brush tool to paint away everything outside the white frame. I'm finding it impossible due to when I let go of the left mouse button, to scroll around my picture as I'm zoomed in, when I continue and overlap on what I've already brushed it erases that overlap. If I toggle between white and black it still erases what I've brushed but in reverse order. It seems I need to brush everything in one continuous motion without letting up on the left mouse button. That won't work either because I'm working zoomed in and the picture wont scroll to areas I can't see. Thanks for coming to my rescue!
ljameso1
June 30th, 2008, 02:22 AM
If you hold down the space bar while painting, it will temporarily change to the move tool without having to let up on the mouse.
