View Full Version : what is it about PSE that makes a computer boot up so slowly?

I have PSE5. On my old computer it would boot up in about 20-30 seconds until I installed PSE. Then it would sit and sit with the wallpaper showing, about 1 1/2 minutes, and then finish booting up.

I've got a new computer, a quad core with 4 gb ram and XP pro. Before PSE install it would boot up in about 25 seconds, after PSE install it brings up the wallpaper and then sits and sits and sits, 1.5-2 minutes before finishing booting up.

I removed PSE from the old computer (Athlon X2 3800, 2 gb ram, XP home) and boot up is back to about 25 seconds.

What does PSE or Adobe do during startup that takes such a long time? Is there anything I can do to make it shorter?

I find PSE5 itself sometimes takes ages to open and other times it's done in a flash:(

I don't know the correlation, but I turn on the computer first thing in the morning and walk away. I don't think it takes more than a minute, though.

When I turn on PSE4, it loads so slowly, I play Spider while it opens up. ;) Talk about slow - sometimes I am sure it's locked up - and never going to come on.

I think the speed of it opening depends on how much auto starts when you put your computer on.
Regarding just elements 5, mine tends to be slow...because I've added lots of: layer styles, actions, brushes etc.
Now, cs3 is pretty quick, and so is elements 6. I've not messed with what comes in the original program (yet).

Michelle, the only extra autostarts are the ones that PSE adds. Like I said, Before PSE install, <30 seconds; after PSE install >2 min; after PSE uninstall <30 seconds. No other programs were added, nothing was done to the computer. The long bootup is from PSE only.

We used to let the computer run all day, but we're trying to be a little more on top of energy costs. We don't start and stop it every 15 minutes, but if we know we'll be away for several hours we turn it off. That's why the slow bootup is annoying. After many problems with windows hibernation we don't use that option anymore.

You could always turn off the PSE autostarts. It just means that PSE will start a little slower.

One of the things that can take PSE awhile to load are the presets. PSE wants to load up everything that you were last using when you closed down. So if you've appended a lot of brushes or layer styles, or shapes etc it is going to try to load everyone of them for you again.

I got this info from Matt K,'s book PS-CS2 Speed Clinic. Many of the tips are applicable to PSE too.

The OP is about booting the computer, not starting PSE up.
