Scott Kelby (http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/?s=david+hill)has written about this on his blog and has some good info.

Joe - thanks for that Kelby link. Although not interested in the Hill effect (cool as it is) - I was blown away by the Dubai photos.

Here's a couple tutorials posted to other forums trying to approximate the Dave Hill effect. There's a lot of discussion online in different forums about how to get his effect. He's sort of like a magician....not giving away his secrets!

Try Googling Dave Hill Effect and you'll get a lot of hits.

I was OK until it said 'layer mask'. I tried using a levels layer but I ended up with just a blurry photo. Obviously I am going wrong somehwere!

when the layer mask is 'hide all', it's filled with black, so with your mask active, ctrl I to invert, it should now be black,

Hi Susan,

It is a bit hard to tell how your effect worked with the image being so big. I tried it with a person and found it didn't work too well. But, I liked the effect on this building...

Probably not anything like Dave Hill's stuff, but I like it all the same...

Rooeey,

PSE6 does not come with a layers mask. You can download Grant's Tools which include a layer mask HERE (http://www.cavesofice.org/%7Egrant/Challenge/Tools/Files.html). The instructions for installing the tools are included in the readme file contained in the download. The layer mask is extremely useful and you will find you use it frequently as you grow with Elements.

I actually use a somewhat similar effect for various pieces...It is loads of fun! While not anywhere near the status of the David Hill creations, I enjoy coming up with the pieces I do.

I am just mucking around with it right now and probably doing something fundamentally wrong right ??

Hi Rooeey,

I think you are trying to apply the mask to a background layer. It can only go on a regular layer. So, to play around, make another layer on top of your background and apply the layer mask. :)

Bayla
April 22nd, 2008, 05:41 PM
Rooeey,

You're probably trying to apply the mask to a background layer. You need to change the layer to a regular layer by double clicking on it & choosing OK or by duplicating before applying the mask.

Bayla

EDIT...seems my email notifications aren't always getting through tonight....I didn't realise Julie had already answered...

Susan, I think the result you are seeing is because the image had problems to start with. The settings that are given in the tutorial are meant for a high-resolution image. If I were you I'd give it a try with an image from your D80, as long as it was taken at the highest quality.

so please take a look and we'd love to see the images you have 'created' with this look :)

I also use PSE6 - To get the layer mask, do I go to Elements 6 (abbreviated tools) or get the "Main tools" at the top? I'm a little skittish here.

I'd get the abbreviated tools, since they're designed for Elements 6 (be sure to read the installation instructions included in the download).:)

Well, I downloaded Grants tools and went through the instructions in the read me file. Everything went great, the mediadatabase rebuilt too.

But, when I open pse6 I don't see "grants tools" in "photo effects" - however, when I say "show all" they are there, I just don't have a "grants tools selection in the menu??

I suppose I can use it this way, but don't know why this happened. Any one have a clue?

Diana

Did you leave the Grants Tools file in its own folder inside the Special Effects folder. I believe I remember something about that needing to be done when I installed it in my 5.0 (a long time ago--memory sometimes fails me).

Actually I opened the folder, selected everything in it and moved the contents to it's final resting place. I did this for both the "actions & pings" and the "xml" folders.

Julie I guess my only problem is going to be not knowing which ones are Grants Tools and which ones came with the program. Darn I would have liked them tagged separately so I could check them all out.

Sharon

Since the actions appear in "Show All", your problem lies with the xml files. Double check your placement of the xml files (...\Locale\ en-US or your own locale>Photo Creations Metadata>Photo Effects). Then rebuild the Mediadatabase.db3 file again.

I have Grant's tools installed and in the Palette Bin under Effects>Photo Effects --Grant's Tools is one of the choices.

Good luck

I have been meaning to come back to this thread for days...my grandson had surgery and everything got a bit sidetracked.

My 'technique' is actually a series of things. I use layers, and lots of erasing and building parts of an image back up. Someone mentioned that they did not like the imperfections shown on a face...that is why you should always start with an untouched image, then create a duplicate layer to alter, allowing yourself the luxury of erasing away areas such as the face, back to the original or at the least, not as much of the effect as the duplicate layer.

Sorry to hear about your grandsons surgery, hope he's on the mend :) Is there any chance of a tutorial or maybe a bit of a list of what you do and in what order? Your photos really are good.
