Hi,
I'm using 5.02 and I need to resize my image for use on a website to 850x490. When I go to resize it, the current dimensions are 3872x2592. If I change the width to 850 then the height defaults to 569. What is the best way to do this? Instead of using the "Image Size" feature, is there a way that I can crop the image to these dimensions, so I can control where the image is cut?

Press C to go to the Crop Tool and you should be able to enter the pixel dimensions in the option bar at the top of the workspace. After you have cropped to your desired size then you can do File>Save for Web. HTH!

I tried that, but the option bar only give me dimensions in inches or I can set the overall resolution. I can't enter pixel dimensions anywhere. Am I missing something?

I'm not at a copy of PSE, but I think if you type in the box 850px (for pixels) that will solve your problem.
If not, there might also be a drop-down list box to change the dimensions from inches to pixels...

My preferred method:
Set rectangular marquee to fixed aspect ratio 850 x 490.
Make my selection. Edit>Copy (Copy merged if original is layered)
File>New from Clipboard
Save if you want a cropped copy at its original resolution.
Save for web and set image size to 850 and jpeg compression to give you the lowest file size with reasonable quality.

Qriss just to clarify what is happening, when you change the width to 850 and assuming you have it set to preserve the proportions, PSE automatically changes the other dimension to the right size. This keeps the image in the same shape proportionally as the originally. If you unselected maintaining proportions and entered both dimensions (or if you asked PSE to resize the canvas size rather than the image size), it would clip off part of your picture but perhaps not what you wanted clipped. Instead follow above suggestions to pick what you want removed. You have to remove something if the proportional dimensions of the image do not match the final size/shape you want, as is the case in your example.

Try this little trick:
(1) Resize your original image to 850x569.
(2) Open a new blank image sized to 850x490.
(3) Copy and paste your resized original into the new empty image.
(4) Using the move tool simply move the image up and down until you're happy with the look.
(5) Flatten and save the new image.
Now you've obviously cropped the image from top to bottom only. There are all kinds of options when you use this method. You could have cropped the original to more near your liking, resized that cropped image to a size that could be pasted into your newly created blank image and moved it around to suit.
Experiment with this a little, I think you will find it very easy to do.
