Help with eye sharpening

I'm using the marquee tool to select just the eyes for sharpeing and I keep getting this error message "No pixels are more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible". Why is this happening?

It sounds like you're on a blank layer.

Either that, or you've got a Feather setting on your marquee tool which is large enough that you don't acutally have any pixels 50% selected - overlapping feathers.
