Or anyone else who knows the magic secret.
How did you do the black and white text on your scrapbook page? I am doing a black and white page for my granddaughter and that kind of text would be perfect. But I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to get that look.

Carol - can you post a link to what you want to accomplish? There are many, many people who are experts on this forum. You may get your answer before Bayla comes back here.
EDIT
I found this (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/gallery/view_img.php?id=27495) - that two tone text looks really cool, doesn't it.
Is this what you are trying to accomplish?
http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p103/cats4jan/Tutorial%20Samples/two-toned-text.jpg
I did this by typing the text once in black - then duplicating the text layer and changing the color on the new layer to white. I then erased the part of the black text layer that was on the black background. You will probably have to simplify the text layer prior to erasing. Right click on the text layer and choose "simplify."
This is a lame way to do this - because Bayla probably used a layer mask to accomplish this - but it worked all right for me.

That is exactly IT. I saw it in her Galerie and it was so striking. I'm going to follow what you did and see what I can accomplish. Thank you so much, Janice. I'll be back when I get the scrapbook page finished.

Carol,
Sorry - only just noticed this thread....I'm crazy busy at home and am not online very much.
I just looked at the layers in my psd file but it seems that once I was happy I merged my layers. I think I just did it the way Janice suggested! To get the black circles on white and vice versa I made two stroke layers, one black & one white and then simply deleted the bits I didn't want to show.
Hope this helps.

Janice, what did you start out with in Editor to accomplish this? Did you have a background before you started out with the Text tool? Please help, Ed Weidman

I always start my projects with
control N
In the next screen, I enter the canvas size - RGB Mode - Transparent background - 300 Resolution
I filled my new canvas with white using the paint bucket.
(Now, if you had started with a white background instead of transparent, this step is unnecessary - but like I said - I ALWAYS start with transparent - it's a habit that works for me)
I used my marquee tool to drag a selection half way across the page and used the paint bucket to fill that selection with black.
I then used the text tool to "write" my name in black
I then duplicated the text layer and changed the font color on the duplicate layer to white.
I chose a hard eraser - then went to the black text layer and erased the black text on the black side.
Depending upon which text layer is on top - you may not see your black text on your white side - you may have to erase the white on the white side or just interchange the layers.

Hi Janice, I am sorry to be a pest but I still can't accomplish the two tones. After using the marquee tool to drag a selection, etc. and fill the selection with black, do you keep the selection open? If so, where do you "write" your name: on the black side or the white side? When I type on the selected (black side) the type is "under" the black selection. What am I doing wrong at this point? Thanks for your help, again-Ed Weidman

After you fill your canvas with the two colors - half black - half white
Grab your Text Tool - go up to the text tool options bar at the top of the screen - there you will see options like font style, font size, and a little square of color - that's where you choose your text color - choose black
Now click on the white side of your canvas - and start typing.
Now move that black text across the two colors - and note how the first half of your word will "disappear" - as you drag it over the black. But, really - it did not disappear - it's just that your text and your background is the same color so you can't differentiate between the two items.
Now duplicate your text layer - while on that text layer - go up to the options bar again - and change the color of your duplicate text layer to white. If the options bar is not up there - double click on the T in the duplicate text layer and that will highlight the text and enable you to change the font color.
Now - you will have two layers of text - one black one white. They will be sitting on top of each other -
Now you will see the white half of your text showing in the black area - but the white half of your text layer will be "missing" from the white half of your background - But - it's there - it's just that the white text blends into the white background.
Trust that it's there -
Grab the eraser tool - and erase where you assume the white text is - and you will see the black show up. You are erasing the white text and letting the black show through.

Carol - I was just reading about doing this same thing on another website. Their instructions say it will work with PSE. I have not tried it yet but the site is: http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/tutorials/ps_twotonedtext.shtml
might be fun to check it out. . .

I did my erasing in a slightly different way to Janice.
I had the black type layer with a white type layer on top. I first simplified the top type layer, then I selected the white background with the magic wand, then with the white text layer targeted I pressed delete and the black type showed up with a nice crisp transition between black on white & white on black.
Here's a screen shot including my layers palette which may be of some use:

You're welcome Ed.
As you can see from Bayla's post - there are many different ways to accomplish the same effect. I think that's part of the reason Elements can be difficult to learn.
Good luck with your "learning curve." Stick to it - it's well worth the journey.

Hi Bayla! My pic was nothing more than a duplication of Janice's shot. I just followed her explicit instructions. Thanks for asking and regards. Ed.:)
