I have been learning from you all for awhile now but this is my first post on here. I have elements 5.0 and am really needing some help. I make announcements / invitations for people.
When I am done making them and am ready to email them to the customer to choose, it's not letting me save to JPEG. This has happened in the past but eventually it lets me. The majority of times, I have no problem. Right now, nothing is working. the message I get is "could not complete your request because of a program error".
I have been searching online for the past three hours trying to figure out what to do. I have tried re-creating my preferences but that didn't work. I have restarted my computer but that didn't help either.
I am losing my mind here, I could really use some help and fast!
It's late, I'm tired, so I hope I explained this okay.

My computer is completely INSANE! I just tried again and it worked with no problems. I did nothing different, it just decided to work.
Since this happens periodically, I would still like feedback from you all on what to do next time.

Would you be able to work slowly, very carefully through the steps you follow, writing down each step before you do the next step, and then post your steps? That might help figure out what's going on.
Good luck

This morning it's back to not working. Okay, I will try to slow down the steps I have done.
When I am in the process of making the invitation, I will save it numerous times in .psd format and have no problems at all. When I am ready for the customer to approve it, I will save it again in .psd and then go to save it in .jpeg to email to them. At this point I get the message "could not complete your request because of program error".
When this happened occasionally before, it would eventually just go ahead and let me. This time I tried resetting my preferences. Adobe told me to go into Documentsandsettings\user\applicationdata\adobe\ph otoshopelements\5.0\editor\photoshopelements5prefs .psp
then I am suppose to rename the extension for the file (photoshopelements5prefs.old) and then when I start elements back up it will create new preferences
problem is when going through this process and I get into editor and I should be at photoshopelements5prefs.psp , the only file is called photocreationpreviews.db3 . I didn't mess with this.
So, I tried the way of when starting up editor, holding control alt shift. I did get the box asking if i wanted to reset/cancel preferences and I said yes.
That is what I have done. I hope that makes more sense. I am at a loss as to what to do now.

Try the Save For Web under the file menu and you can have it saved in png (saves transparency), jpeg or GIF and also select the size and quality you desire. I use it to save copies of files like e-mails and also programs that will not accept PSD files.

My next question is if I "save for web", how will that affect the quality. Not only do I have to email it to customers, I also have to upload to the lab to be printed.

I think if you look at the settings you will find that a JPEG saved for web with no change in pixel dimension and the JPEG setting at Maximum file size is the same as using Save As from a psd. I'm not sure what if any quality differences there might be between Save for Web max quality and Save As.
Maybe somone can answer that or maybe your lab would be able to give you the parameters they require for your quality of print.

Karen:
Do you FLATTEN the layers before saving as a .jpeg?
After you're done with your project you save it as a .psd file. This keeps the layers in tact.
In order to save it as a .jpeg you need to FLATTEN the layers.
Then when you SAVE AS you select .jpeg from the pulldown.

I just tried to save it without flattening the layers and then tried after flattening. Still no luck either way.

After you flatten and you SAVE AS what file type does it save? .psd?

After you FLATTEN; FILE>SAVE AS ...
In the Save As window there are two more windows; one for file name and one for format. In the Format window use the arrow to get the dropdown list to select JPEG. Scroll through this window - you may need a file to SAVE AS to view the contents - to ensure that JPEG is available.
If not then you'll need to add JPEG to the list.

When I go into "save as", I do select .jpeg , it then has the window where it asks me what level to save it as (I don't remember the exact wording, its where I choose 1-12). I usually select 10 (I have tried different levels and it doesn't make a difference). After I select that is when my error message pops up.

Hi ...
You seem to have done all the trouble shooting that I can think of ... only thing left is to uninstall Elements and do a reinstall :(
