Opening two images

Hi, first time on.
I want to open two images on Elements 3 in the same window in editor to move one over the other but they just drop into the bin at the bottom. Is there any way of doing this without using copy /paste.

Hi, Briam and welcome. You can get both images to appear in the editor window by making sure that when you open them you click on the multi-window mode (overlapping squares) at the top right corner of the image's own window. Once you have the two open, you can move them around to put them side-by-side.

With respect to putting them together, I assume you know that they'll be layered when you're done, and you'll only be able to see the top layer until you do some further editing. But to get them together, you can use the Move tool (4-pointed arrow) to drag from one and drop onto the other. Select>All, Edit>Copy in one and Edit>Paste onto the other also works.

Linda Sattgast's latest newsletter finally cleared this mystery up for me.

The new Photo Bin is part of the confusion. You can't use the Move tool to click on a photo in the Photo Bin and drag it onto your page document. Clicking on a photo thumbnail only does one thing: select a photo and bring it forward if you have more than one file open.

Secondly, check to make sure that you're not in the Maximize Mode. You can only see one file at a time when you're in the Maximize Mode, and to move a photo onto your page you must be able to see both your page and the photo at the same time.

Mary, that's a very useful tip. Personally, I keep the Photo Bin closed all the time; takes up too much screen real estate that could be devoted to editing!

I assume that the question has to do with compositing two documents, and the copy and paste technique has been described.
I just wanted to add two tips.
First, if you want to have the document that is being copied and moved to be centered in the background document, hold down the shift key as you're dragging and dropping.
The second suggestion is to select the new documents layer (ctrl/command click on the layer), then bring up the Free Transform Tool (ctrl/command T). Now you can resize the object or image relative to your Background Layer image.
