View Full Version : off-line media CD question

I want to keep some images on CD's rather than on my hard drive. I used the Organize FILE> BURN> MOVE option to do this.

From Windows XP, when I click "My Computer" and then the CD drive where the off-line media CD is inserted, Windows won't display the contents of the CD that I created using E3 Organizer. Is it typical that you can only "read" an off-line media CD by using E3 Organizer, or is there a problem with the CD that I created? Thanks for the help.

Roberta,

There is something wrong with the cd that you created. I had this happen once - strangely enough the first time I ran the Move option. I used it several times subsequently and I can read each disc through Windows.

I don't use this option to physically move (rather than copy or back up) photos anymore though as I think letting PE delete the files before you know the burn has been completely successful is too risky.

If I do use move, I always select "no" to the remove from the hard drive option. But to be honest I only really back up or copy files. I delete files from the hard drive manually, that way I'm in control of what is happening.

Mike, Thanks for the suggestion. Fortunately I had saved copies of the photos using Windows before I imported them to E3 Organizer and tried to use the "Move" function. I started from scratch using the method that you suggested - it seems a lot safer doing it that way.

I have to admit that this experience with not being able to read a CD burned using E3 Organizer has made me a little sceptical about the catalog "backup" function. Has anyone out there had any success "restoring" a catalog from a backup CD?

Thanks again for your help.

Roberta,

With one exception, I'm doing such maintenance outside of PE3 at present. The only backup I do in PE3 is when importing new images using PE3. This has worked ok so far...

Mike, when you delete files from your hard drive manually, do you keep a proxie of it in your catalog. If so, how do you connect it to your off line copy?

Ronnie,

I seem to remember that Mike said he would be away until Friday ... but hopefully someone else may be able to give you an answer (I'm a Mac users so I can't help on this one :) )

Ronnie,

Firstly I personally wouldn't recommend deleting files when using the "Move" option in PE3. There have been a few people who have created backup CD's only to find the CD is either blank or it can't be read. If the PE3 process fails you will lose your pictures.

But... to answer your question, when you select Move and delete, PE3 keeps a thumbnail in the Photo Browser. If you select the thumbnail PE3 will tell you it needs the CD, when PE3 loads the photo it should reconnect the file (just as if you used an external drive).
