I love it when I have few free moments to try one of the tutorials. Here's my first shot at moving something outside a traditional frame. It's subtle (too subtle?)?

And, I'll offer myself the first bit of critique: I think I spent so much time working on the breakout part that I neglected other things, like making sure I left enough area around the lighthouse and making sure it was straight BEFORE I cropped it.

At any rate, here it is:

Your personal critiques aside.. I like it. Very nice job.

On other way to try it..just for fun..it may make it not as nice. Would be, to use the whole original photo and just screen or desaturate the part not in the frame. It might lose its "POP" this way though. The blue really sets off the white.

An excellent first shot-I think if you're seeing things yourself that you'd like to change then you'll keep practicing until you get better and better-great way to learn. BTW, lovely lighthouse-where was the picture taken?

Keep at it-you're doing just fine :D

I really like it too ... but I see what you mean about straightening the image first :)

Thanks for the encouragement, all. I appreciate it.

Carol, the lighthouse is at Fort Casey, on Whidbey Island in Washington State. Our family camps there every year. It's the highlight of the summer for our kids. We enjoy it an awful lot, too!
