I am trying to use a avi file a that is 720 and another that 640 that is AV1 and have tried it also in DV, and both will not fully inport into PE4.0, as it tries to find the file again stating"
Unsupported format or damaged file/One of the necessary components may not have been installed."

I tried a smaller file of the same video in 320 avi and that imported. Bot of the avi and Dv 640 and 720 dpi files work in Window player and Windows Movie maker so that are not incorrect formates or damaged files. Can anyone help? as using the lower qaulity file gives a substandard ressult in sharing it out.

Export the files from Windows Movie Maker as DV-AVI, there is a free tutorial on how to do that here http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1911
should be bottom middle tutorial. The resulting file will work fine in Premiere Elements ;)

It would be helpful to get a better handle on your starting material. What confused me was "Both of the avi and DV 640 and 720 dpi files work in Windows player and Windows Movie Maker". Where does the dpi come in? That is a printing resolution term. Correct me if I am wrong in my assumptions:

You are saying that the video to be described cannot be brought into the Premiere Elements 4.

You have videos with file extension of .avi. Some have a frame size of 640 x 480 pixels (30 fps), and some have a frame size of 720 x 480 pixels (30 fps). You cannot get these to the Premiere Elements 4 Timeline. How have you been doing that? Video file saved to internal hard drive, and using Get Media/Files and Folders in Premiere Elements 4??? I suspect that there may be more to the story than you have given.

Although these files have the extension .avi, do you have any idea what the file format is? There are more than one type of .avi file, example DV AVI, AVI Motion JPEG, AVI MPEG4. As has been said recently in several threads here, avi is considered the wrapper and the associated DV, Motion JPEG, or MPEG4 is the compressor type. Premiere Elements works best with DV AVI. Bottom line: where are your .avi files coming from? A point and shoot camera, other??? How is the movie file type described in the specifications of the recording device? These files are not DivX or XviD? Are they?

Once we know what you are starting with, then we can better judge if they are unusable files that could use "Windows Movie Maker" conversion specifically to DV AVI, not just DV and not just AVI. Also, it would help to have that information so that we could judge if the file type will even be supported by the Window Movie Maker.

Assuming that your files can and need to be converted to DV AVI before attempting to get them into Premiere Elements 4, the following FAQ will tell you how to do that step by step using Window Movie Maker.

Details are important. If any or all of my comments are not clear or confusing, please say so, and I will try to rephrase my response to better help you.

I will be watching for your progress.

I took the files, which where done at a professional studio with Apples Final Cut on a Mac and saved for PC DV-AVI in 720, and opened them in Windows Movie maker and resaved them again as Dv AVI and that now works in PE4.0.

Yet now I have another problem. I took this first part which is a 30 second commercial of my series on real estate, and added it to a 3 min segment I made in PE40, and saved the entire 3.5 mint video as a Window Player file in 320x240 30 FPS and mono audio. Then I uploaded this to my web site http://cogent-plan.com/html/video_footage.html (http://cogent-plan.com/html/video_footage.html) I am having 2 problems 1) it is pausing automatically for me, so I wonder if this is being cased by the audio, as I increased in PE40 to a level 5 decibels?

The 2nd problem is the scenes where I am talking are very fussy. Which is weird because in the first 30 second commercial, I used the same Sony HDRHC9 and it’s not fussy in those shots. The background is not fussy either. I did scale myself as larger in some of the scenes 185% and in others 125%, yet on most scenes they were 100% and they are still fussy. I did use a chroma key for the virtual set with “high smoothing” and used “auto color, auto contracts, and auto levels”. I have now undone the high smoothing, yet should I take of the auto levels, color and contrast as possibly this too is effecting clarity? Or can you think of another reason for the fussiness?
