Hi all
New to the forum.
I've finished my first project, and am trying to burn it. I keep getting a transcoding error at different % through the encoding process. What is the problem? Premiere elements also crashes sometimes. I don't have any issues with elements 6.0 or any other programs.
I've got Win xp, 50GB of free HD, Dual 1.9 Ghz processors, and to 2GB of ram. That should be enough resources.....
Please help

There are a lot of possibilities. You did not describe the content of your video (format and time wise). I would also like to know if you have any stop markers on your Timeline. I just assumed that you were using DVD disc 4.7 GB/120 min rather than BluRay??? Where are the scratch files directed to, internal hard drive/same as project or external hard drive? Some quick things to do might be:
1. try burning one of the program's sample video to DVD-VIDEO instead of your creation.
2. try burning to folder, followed by using a program like Nero (Video Files) to burn that saved folder to disc.
All that being said, before doing anything, please read the following.
The PDF Help that comes with Premiere Elements 4 offers the following suggestions re: encoding troubleshooting. You would find the following link under: Troubleshooting/Creating DVD/Encoding error occurs when burning to DVD.

Excellent suggestions ATR, burn a simple project and trying to burn to a folder ;)
If those do work then you will need to start going through your project with a fine tooth comb. Check for blank spaces (no video), you will need to fill those spaces with something, even black video is good. This also happens sometimes when the same effect is applied to the same clip more than once, other reasons as well but those are the primary ones.

You have been armed with a lot of material with which to work.
I noted that your thread is your first, and I am not sure how comfortable you are with Premiere Elements.
Although the response aims at being comprehensive, sometimes the material presented in respond can be overwhelming to someone starting out. So, it is very important to point out that, if you have any questions about what is being suggested, please ask us to restate it to make it clearer and better present it to you.

All,
Thanks for all the info. I'll try to digest it tonight, but might not get through it until the weekend.
I'm a former user of iLife products (iMovie and iDVD). But, since changing companies, I don't have my Mac anymore. I purchased Adobe and a new PC to do home movies from our DV camcorder. So, I am familiar with many things, but not necessarily premiere elements. iLife was more straightforward.
My movie is a little over an hour. I am using DVD +R (compatible with my DVD player). It is all AVI format (I believe, as imported from a DV tape). My camera and the movie are NTSC widescreen. My project was about 2 hours long, but reading in the manual told me that a 4.7GB dvd is good for an hour of video....longer time means more compression and data loss. So I took the slide show portion (50min) out and shortened it to about an hour.
I saved the slideshow (exported from photoshop 6) as a separate project. It burned with no problems.
I'll check the movie for erroneous menu items. I do have a stop point at the end of the film. Some clips do have photoshop effects (auto color, etc) in them.
My hard drive is defragged and power settings make it never go to sleep, so I'm not sure what the issue is with the movie. I'll post again when I read your links. Thanks for keeping up with me. This means a lot to me and my family.

I tried to burn to a folder, and that didn't work. Premeire crashed. I'll disable anti-virus and try again. If that doesn't work, I'll try the export to AVI, import, burn technique.

When you used burn to folder, did you use the video that you have been trying to encode or did you use the Sample Video Files (avi) that are in the Program Files for Premiere Elements?

Well, from one of the links posted I:
turned off indexing of C drive
disabled internet
disabled all firewall/antivirus
unchecked "hibernate" (even though settings were to never hibernate)
One or all of these did the trick. I burned the movie to DVD with no problems. Thanks all.
