OK-Here is what I am trying to do. I am putting together a simple family collage on a black background. I have moved the pictures to the background and was able to put a stroke around each one and a bevel. Seems like I get a bounding box around several pictures when I am attempting to select each one. Also the blending mode says pass through (as opposed to normal) on several of the pictures. If I change to normal there is a small box in the layer thumbnail that goes away. If I turn off the bounding box I can move each picture individually. What's going on?

If you have moved the pictures to the background, then they will all be on one layer - so they will operate as a unit.
How is it that you are trying to select them?
Also the blending mode says pass through (as opposed to normal) on several of the pictures.I have never heard of "pass through" blending mode. What version of PSE are you using? Also, I thought you said you moved all of the pictures to the background...?
I was wondering if you might be using the Move tool with Auto Select Layer enabled - but I can't coax it to behave as you describe.
I guess more specifics about how your working will help.

As I moved each photo to the background it created a new layer for each picture. However I could not add a stroke outline until I added either a layer style (bevels) or simplified the layer. I am using PSE 6.0

epaul,
are you dragging from the bin onto your background? That's a no no in 6.
If you are in the maximise mode you must drag the image down on to the layer image in the project bin.

Thanks for your help. Here is what I ended up doing. I converted all the pictures and background to JPEGs (they were a mix of .psd and JPEGs). I did the old ctrl-A, ctrl-c on the pics then ctrl-v on the background layer. I then added a new layer above each picture in the stack for the stroke outline. I applied a layer style to each picture. If I had to do any adjustments I linked the picture with it's stroke outline to nudge it into place. Tedious-but it worked.

Kev, I don't understand: where is the image, that you intend to drag down, located before you do the dragging? Please explain. TIA , Ed Weidman.

Ed,
hope this makes it clearer.
I opened a new page, this is the background layer. Next open a photo, it will be on it's own layer. While holding the Alt key double click on the thumbnail of the photo, this makes it an ordinary layer. Then using the move tool drag it down onto the background in the photo bin.
Have included a Screen Shot to make it easier to understand.
