Can anybody out there explain to me how I can erase the .xmp files in My Pictures? When I try to delete them, they simply multiply. I'm sure there is a simple method for doing this, but it's still a mystery to me.

You shouldn't have to delete .xmp files. They are sidecar files to the RAW files you've processed in ACR. The .xmp files contain the last settings present when you finished with the RAW edit. It is generally beneficial to have those settings available should you reopen the RAW file.

My problem with .xmp files is that I have copies of copies of copies of them, and they clutter the My Pictures screen. After I have deleted the original photo, I am no longer interested in having the .xmp file. But efforts to delete them only result in more copies. I understand their value for photos that are saved. But for discards, what's the point?

Yes Walt you are right, they are no good to you now that the RAW files are gone. If you are using a PC have you tried to delete them out of your Windows' My Picture folders? That worked for me when I dumped some RAW files. I just went to the My Pictures>foldername> sorted it by file type, selected then deleted all .xmp's in one fell swoop. Then I immediately dumped my recycle bin. I hope that will work for you too.

Kim,
Thanks for your sugestions on the .bmp files. I'm working on trying to put them all in a single folder. That'll reduce the clutter.

The XMP files are only of use if you want to exchange a RAW file with another program such as Lightroom or another version of Photoshop.

If you don't need them then you can turn off the production of them in the ACR preferences.
