Layer styles not sticking?

I'm playing around with building an alpha set. I'm sort of following Wendy's tut, but not totally. Here's the scoop:

I created a new, blank file. Typed a row of text. Applyed a layer style. Simplified the text. Rectangular marquee on one letter. Drag it down to a second, blank doc in the project bin.

Layer style disappears once it hits the new file.

I tried this experiment with a shape. The shape held onto the layer style.

I saved the file in PNG format: the text lost its layer style in the move.

Am I missing something fundamental, or have I just stumbled on a new bug?

Hi Val ...

The effect of some layer styles does reduce when you flatten the image ... especially glittery or gold ones.

You just have to experiment with them bu increasing things like the bevel :)

That's odd. Never noticed this before. Must have been using different layer styles!
