I have been a previous PE3 user and have had no difficulty importing *.mod files. I recently upgraded to PE4 and have been unable to import the exact same files. I have both currently installed on the same computer running XP, and the same file which will load in PE3 won't load in PE4. Anyone else with similar experience or solutions?

Do I understand you correctly…you have these mod files saved to your internal hard drive and you are trying unsuccessfully to get them into Premiere Elements 4 via Get Media/Files and Folders?? If so, what is the source of these mod files?

You could convert your mod files into DV AVI, using a free download of a software like MPEGStreamclip for file conversion. Then bring the DV AVI version into Premiere Elements 4.

That just addresses the immediate issue, not why these mod files work in Premiere Elements 3 and not Premiere Elements 4. Is your operating system Windows XP or Vista, and is your Premiere Elements the 3.0.2 version (the one with the Update)?

I will think about this some more and return later.

To be continued…

Yes, you understood me correctly. The files were created by a JVC Hard Disk Camcorder, model GZ-MG555U. They are on acomputer running XP. The version of PE3 is 3.0.2.

I appreciate your suggestion of converting to an AVI file. I had read this elsewhere and had used the program supplied with the camcorder to convert the file to AVI. To my surprise, it wouldn't work either. I then reloaded PE4 thinking there was an error in the program, but even after reloading PE4, neither the MOD file or AVI files will load. All I get is the icon that you see while the file is indexing, but it never converts to the captured images.

My main desire is to get PE4 working as well as PE3 has worked on my XP machine. To complicate matters further, but I don't want you to spend an excessive amount time on it because, after all - it is Vista, I got a new computer running Vista and haven't been able to load the same files on either PE3 or PE4. My assumption is with all of Vista's incompatibility issues it is more likely to involve a problem with Vista than PE3 or 4. For now I would just like to get PE4 working on XP. Thanks for your help.

I am still thinking about cause and effect, but I would definitely try the MPEGStreamclip software before you give up on the project.

You said that you converted the MOD files from the camcorder to AVI with software that came with the camcorder. Forgive me for asking, but did you convert specifically to DV AVI? As you may already know, there a lot of forms of AVI. AVI is just the "container", and DV is the compression type.

From what I have read, there are people out there successfully using the MOD files with Premiere Elements 4/Windows XP (MOD is on the supported import file list). Of course, there are those who are reporting problems. That is when the MOD to DV AVI workaround gets invoked.

In all the troubleshooting that you have done so far with Windows XP and Premiere Elements, have you attempted to uninstall Premiere Elements 3 and just run Premiere Elements 4/XP and see what happens?

Do not give up. The download is free, and a little bit more exploration may resolve the issue and get you pass this.
