Is there any way to make hi dynamic range photos using Elements 5? I've seen the Flickr group that features them and was wondering if it is possible to create that type of image in Elements.

Only if you're willing to spend hours dinking around with layer masks. A much easier and cost effective option is a program called photomatix.

From my reading, I would say that the practical answer is Yes for Photoshop CS2/CS3, but No for Photoshop Elements.

Besides Photoshop CS2/CS3, I have seen software called Photomatix Pro recommended for this purpose.

You might want to check out PSE (v#) Maximum Performance by Mark Galer. He has a chapter on HDR in elements. He creates a faux HDR by using a layer style preset that he supplies on a accompanying DVD (supplied free with the book). This is a good book to own once you know the basics. You should check it out.

Elements can't produce or even open a true 32bit HDR image. As others have said you would need something like Photomatix or CS3. Photomatix does have a free trial that leaves a watermark for images that are Tone Mapped.
You may be able to do a process called Exposure Blending in Elements. Here is a tutorial (http://www.barbeephoto.com/articles/blending/blending.htm) that can get you started.

There is a free HDR software: qtpfsgui.

If you build a High-Light Mask, or a Shadow Mask, can't you just shot for one Mask, and burn in for the other; or verse-visa?
