I have experimented with the magnetic lasso but after I have made any adjustments to the area inside the lasso how do I deselect it? There is no check box to accept my changes and the dotted line stays around the area selected. I have tried every way I know to deselect the selected area but I am doing something wrong. I know it is most likely something very simple and obvious but I need someone to tell me what I am doing not doing.

Hi Joe-

To deselct, you can press ctrl-d (Mac: Command-D) or you can go to Select>Deselect.

That'll get rid of the marching ants!

Joe,

1. The "marching ants" are around a selection. To get rid of the selection, hit the delete key on the keyboard. If you want to retain the selection, but get rid of the surrounding area, go to Select>inverse, then hit delete on the keyboard.
2. As noted above, Select>deselect gets rid of the "marching ants."
3. Another thing that is important to know about is that as you craft a selection, a left mouse click will place an anchor point that the tool does not apply automatically. If you should go astray when making the selection, but before completion of the process, you can delete (i.e. reverse) anchor points by hitting delete on the keyboard.
4. Sometimes the took goes crazy and is all over the place. Just hit Esc on the keyboard to get back to square one.
