I'm at wit's end. When I try to do a full edit from the organizer, my pictures don't open in the editor. I have re-set preferences (with the keyboard command as well as deleting the file) about 4 times, have restored the catalog 3 times and even re-loaded PSE5.
Some pictures WILL open and some won't. I've searched the forums, google, etc.
About 13,000 jpg pictures
Running XP
PSE5 is loaded on a laptop and I use an external drive to store the picturesI've had this problem a couple of times before but restoring or re-setting the preferences fixed the problem.
I have no idea what else to try...

How is your external hard drive formatted, FAT32 or NTFS?

Do you have XP and can you do a System Restore to a prior time when this was working?
Also, have you tried creating a new User Account with Administrative rights?
I will continue to think on this one.

Add on thought...will the Photoshop Elements 5 Editor accept photos that are stored on the C: drive instead of your external hard drive?

In V5 I often had this happen. Couldn't open from the organizer into the editor; couldn't save to the organizer from the editor. This is why I upgraded to V6.
Close the program and with your finger on the control key open the organizer. A dialog box will appear that asks if you wish to compact and recover the catalog. Click okay. It will take quite a while for a catalog your size, and it will look like it is not responding at 33% and 66%. Do nothing to it, because it is still working and eventually will reconnect the two modules. Just leave the room and check on it occasionally to see if it has finished.
Let us know if this works for you!

This is a company laptop that does not use system restore. I'm unfamiliar with the "new user" suggestion and think that I probably can't do that on a corporate computer.

I deleted a picture or 2 and moved them to the C drive and pulled them into the organizer and it did work correctly but don't have the time to use that fix on potentially hundreds of pictures.

I've done this about 3 or 4 times and the situation remains the same.

I am not an Organizer person by nature. I am lucky if I use about 10 photos in the Organizer at one time. All that being said, these are some additional comments:
Since we know that
your external hard drive is NTFS, not FAT32,
you could go from Organizer thumbnails to Full Editor OK when the originals were saved just now to the C: drive as a mini test
This would suggest a connection problem between the Organizer and the source material on the external hard drive as ES has mentioned. She has been there, done that, so I would defer to her insights.
But, how about this. I take it that you can get your photos that are saved to external hard drive into the Organizer as thumbnails, but cannot move the image(s) over to the Full Editor for edit. If you right click one of those problem thumbnails in the Organizer, select Properties, and then look in General for the file location, what does it say? Does it show the external hard drive as the source location?
I am hoping that we can come up with an answer here for you. There are a lot of great Photoshop Elements people here who fully utilize the Organizer and have overcome some awesome issues. Have you been over to the Photoshop Elements User to User Forum at Adobe http://www.adobe.com. They have a special section of that forum just for Organizer.
Also, have you searched your memory to remember what you could have done from the last time this worked? Are you using the same User Account each time you use this company computer?

Thanks for the encouragement. I did as you suggested. In the properties it does show them in my G drive where they are supposed to be. As far as remebering what I've done different, I can't.
I did reach out to the Adobe forum and am copying a string below...
My big question is (and I don't have an answer back) if I re-set the Organizer preferences (one of the few things I haven't tried), will I lose all of my tags and version sets?

When I see a problem with sending a photo from the Organizer to the Editor, I would generally recommend
- doing the Catalog Recover (think you did that)
- deleting (or renaming so they are recreated) both the Preferences for the Editor and the Preferences for the Organizer (based on the post, I am not sure if you have deleted the preferences for the Organizer. Did you ?)
External Hard Drive -
Do you make sure that your external hard drive is ALWAYS connected with the same drive letter? Because if you do not PSE will be looking for the photo using the drive letter assigned when it was cataloged. For example if the external drive was assigned drive letter F when that photo was cataloged and the external drive is now assigned drive letter G, PSE will not be able to find the photo file in order to send it to the Editor.
Since you say that some will open and some will not and it seems that they are all jpeg (true?), then I wonder if there is ANY pattern to those that will not open?
How much free space do you have on your system drive? Have you recently done a disk cleanup of your system drive using the Windows XP cleanup or other tool?

I thought that I heard that resetting the organizer can eliminate all the tags (which I don't want to do). Will it ???
I have done the catalog recover.
The drive is always connected as the same letter (G).
The pictures are all jpeg.
My G drive (with all the pictures) is half full. My laptop (with PSE5) is about 75% full.
Have used check disk on both drives...
The pictures that won't open are the older ones, from what I can tell.

If I copy the pictures to my C drive from the G drive (where they are all stored) and then import them back in, the editor works correctly. My newer pictures work fine but the old ones are as I described above. I've been doing some of the movement above but it will take forever.
What will I lose if I reset the organizer preferences? I do NOT want to lose the version sets or tags ?
Thanking you in advance...
