Anita,
My guess is that you are using the Horizontal Type Mask tool.
Just click the 1st button in the Options bar.

If you are trying to highlight by control clicking on your text layer in the layers palette - Try clicking on the thumbnail without any extra keys held down - that will highlight the text.

If you click on the text layer while holding the control key down, you will get a selection of the text instead of highlighting it.

But, first do as Andrei recommends - when you are first typing your text - make sure you are using the regular text tool and not the horizontal mask tool - the mask tool is for making a selection in the shape of your word.

I quite often have this problem as well Anita, very frustrating, I make sure I am on the correct layer, I make sure I have clicked the text tool but when I try to highlight it all I get is the marching ants, it doesn't happen every time, just enough to be frustrating, I can't help you solving the problem but I am here to see what the solution is, I just keep trying and eventually it works right....??????? why does it work sometimes and not others?
I hope someone can help you.

Highlighting text after a text layer is already completed is tricky.

If you open the text tool and try to highlight the text, unless you get that cursor right on top of one of the letters, it makes a new text layer instead.

I've found that clicking on the THUMBNAIL in the text layer is the easiest way to highlight your text.
