signature brush

I am using PSE 6 with Windows XP. I have created a signature brush using a method such as Wendy's instruction from many years ago. I can assign the signature to my image using a duplicate layer but I am not able to apply drop shadows and these types of effects to the signature the effect goes around the image instead. I have used this method in PSE5 before and can not seem to figure out what the problem is. It's been a long day and maybe that's part of the problem.

I would appreciate any help from forum members

I am sorry about this post. I just realized that I should use a new layer instead of a duplicate layer to add the drop shadow effect.
Maybe this will help someone else.
