PSE3 corrupt layer style image effect, re-install

On opening PSE3 the message "the styles file is bad or corrupt" appears. In selecting each of the styles it was narrowed down to the image effect style. How can I re load only that particular style?

If I re-install PSE3 what happedn to all the tags etc in the catalog?

How does a file become corrupt?

Hi J,

Before re-installing it's worth resetting the preferences file...

Start Elements in Editor and straightaway hold down the Ctrl-Alt-Shift keys together. Keep holding these keys until a windows comes up asking if you want to delete Settings, select Yes.

First thing I tried was a reset of preferences, it failed.

Also tried a re-name of the image style file and then a reset, also failed.

By "it failed" do you mean the procedure ran ok but didn't cure the problem or you couldn't reset the preferences? (Did you get the confirmation window?).

The reset was a Failure to correct the style file corrput error.

Hmmm looks like you need to re-install then. Your Catalog should be ok, but if you want to be safe then just move the two folders "Catalog Folders" and "Catalogs" that are in C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Adobe to another location (say My Documents).

Oh yes, be sure to disable your anti-virus software during the install...

Hi Mike,

Inserting the PSE3 CD and running setup.exe to start the install produces a screen with a choice of remove or repair of PSE3. The repair option seemed like the proper choice as it would repair corrupt files. However, as it progresses it asks to insert disc 1, as there is only one CD, it seemed an odd request, clicking on OK only produces the same request to insert disc 1.

Any ideas around this before I do a remove and re-install?

It is not possible to do a repair inthese circumstances you just have to remove PSE3 and do a fresh install.

Hi Mike and Wendy,

Backed up the catalogs and the extras in the presets then performed a remove and install. Upon opening PSE3 my catalog and tags were still present. The layer style files were available and without any of them indicating a corruption.
