I just finished the layers tutorial. I am following the collage tutorial which uses 4.0. I have 6.0. I have a background, then I add an adjustment layer, click levels, click OK and add a photo for my next layer. The layer I created with the photo says "indicates this is a frame layer". When I go to click "group with previous" it is not highlighted so I cannot. Any ideas? Thanks.

Randall,
You get that 'indicates this is a frame layer' message when you drag a photo up from the photobin to the layout in the work space. This is a peculiarity of PSE6. Try instead dragging your photo down from the workspace to your layout in the photobin.
Take a look at THIS THREAD (http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34485&highlight=frame+layer) where someone had the same problem as you.

Bayla,
I think you're onto the problem, but I'm still not understanding. I open up one image which will be my background image. Then I open up my next image (a photo). It is now on top of the background image in the edit area. I'm not sure what you mean about dragging it to the project bin. I guess I don't understand how to get this plain layer./

Randall,
How are you getting your photo onto your background image? There are various ways to do it but in PSE6 if you have the move tool selected and drag it from the project bin up onto your background it'll come in as a frame layer which is what you want to avoid.
You need to either open your photo and drag it down onto your background in the project bin, or have them both open in the workspace (in tile or cascade mode) & drag the photo onto the background
or copy (Ctrl-c)and paste (Ctrl-v) onto your background.

Randall,
you can also right click on the layer that is showing as framed and clicking simplify layer.
