I just purchased and installed Elements 4.0. I went to the organizer in 4.0 and almost none of the photos I had in 3.0 transferred over into the new program. There are squares with big question marks on them but no pictures. Any idea what is going on and how I can fix it?
Thanks,
Glenn

Hi Glenn,

The first thing I would try is to update the thumbnails. Select the images, right click on one of them and from the menu choose "Update thumbnail for selected items".

Let us know if that cures the problem.

Mike, Thanks for the suggestion. I did a "select all" but there are still many photographs that did not transfer. I don't know what to do next.

I just found this post on the Adobe support site. I haven't had time to try it, but I hope it works. I've had the same problem you mentioned, athough the photos were always there when I tried to open them.

The transfer program only partly worked. It did not transfer all the old files but only some of them. This is an issue that I am sure will continue to come up. Now, I have found a second glitch. I pressed the Help section and also pressed F1, which is supposed to open up the Help section, but it will not open it up. Any suggestions? Thanks.

FYI.
I found that I had to delete 3.0 and reinstall 4.0 for the Help option to work.

Thank you in advance. I haven't installed 4 yet, it has arrived, but I want to keep 3 so I can access chanel mixers & curves.
May need to keep 4 on another machine to start with?

Am I to understand that the curves and channel mixer will not work in 4.0?

Hi Glen ..

Adobe have indeed blocked the way that Curves and Channel Mixer were being accessed .. so it is not possible to use them with PSE4 :(

I am very dissapointed with 4.0. I have lost my photos on at least 2 occasions and now the program will not import photos from my D70 although it did import then earlier on today. I know it is not the camera because I was able to import them using another program. I would tell people not to buy this program until they get the bugs worked out. Now I wll have to spend the money to talk with Adobe to get these problems fixed. And now we can't use Curves and the Channel Mixer!

And that's just the beginning of the surprises in v4. If it was an automobile we would have some recourse under the "Lemon Law".

Boy, after reading this thread I'm back to not sure if I should get PSE 4 to use in addition to PSE 3. I had decided not, then after reading the special bonus addition of the newsletter, there were a few features (seeing the font, text box, correction of the flying marquee, etc) that made me decide to change my mind. I even went and bought it at Costco, but there was no upgrade rebate in the box, and I found out that the box from Costco is not elligible for the rebate, so, I returned it. I was just doing one last check before ordering it from Amazon, and now, I'm back to not being sure if I should upgrade.
I'm learning about the mysterious ways of computers and their software, and still find it very frustrating trying to track down problems as mine or the software, or the hardware. I don't think I'm up to problem solving a buggy program :? . Are many people running into these problems?
Back on the fence,
Virginia

Oh no! I am so glad I read the warnings before installing this - I thought PSE 4 might be a great upgrade but I cannot afford to lose my photos-now I will return it and the books I ordered to go along with it.

Hi Beryl ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

I really don't think that you would lose all your photos if you install PSE4. Have you been using PSE3 for long?

Hi Wendy,
I am in awe of your gallery!
No, I just started using PSE3.
I thought PSE4 might enhance my experience further, but am not willing to risk frustration with program glitches - am still on a learning curve!
I could try it out on my other machine I guess but if the program has these issues as I read- then I would rather send it back!

Hi Beryl,

If you have only just started to use Elements then just carry on using it ... and any help we can give you then just ask.

Thank you for the compliment about my Gallery ... I really enjoy creating thing in Elements. Hopefully it won't be long before you get some of your work into a Gallery ... :)

I don't think people are really "losing" their photos. I think the "organizer" is losing them. Either they are moving their photos in Windows Explorer (or Exploder, as my and my husband like to call it), and then the organizer doesn't know where they went, or the catalog is getting corrupted and they need to do a File->Catalog->Recover. (I do one after every import and every several edits.)

I agree with Trish here... it's the link to the photo that is being lost... not the photo itself. Organizer doesn't store the actual picture, just a low res thumbnail and information about the file (in the Catalog).

If you can't find a photo in Organizer, then search for it in Explorer... you should find it there. As why Organizer is losing links, this usually happens when you do things to files outside of PSE.
