Lightroom Playground Week 11

The purpose of this weekly challenge is to encourage creative experimentation with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. If you are intrigued by the program and would like to give it a try, here (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/) is the link to the 30-day trial version.

Make any adjustments you choose to the following image and post your results in this thread. Share how you processed the image and provide information on any develop presets used. Please stick with Lightroom for your modifications, except for sharpening, noise reduction, and resizing. Matt Kloskowski's Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Killer Tips (http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/) is a great source for Lightroom Develop presets.

Hope this one is fun to work on. It is the Oswego Harbor lighthouse on Lake Ontario, in Oswego NY and taken February 16, 2008.

Hi Nicole,

I'm glad you joined us! I suggest using Pixentral.com to upload pictures for the forum. Size your image with the longest side around 800 pixels. You can set the file parameters under "Export" in the Lightroom File menu. Go to Pixentral (http://pixentral.com/) and browse to the image on your hard drive. When it is uploaded, click on the very bottom url under the uploaded image (make sure you get the entire url copied). Then use the 'insert link' icon in the reply box when you write your post. You can certainly post it as an attachment but yours seems too small.

I like the black and white and the crop you did. Did you use a develop preset or use your own formulation to convert to black and white? It brings the ice out and makes it look very cold!

Just a bit of color, clarity, & vignetting. The main thing was straighten the horizon & I found the bird or U.F.O a bit distracting so I removed it:D

I like it, Rob. Even if you did remove the mother ship! :D

I really like the deep blue tones you gave it. Again, it has that cold, icy feel and looks like it was taken right at dusk. Nice!

Thanks Julie! I knew there must be a way. For this photo I used the one and only preset that I've developed myself, and just tweaked the vignetting a bit. I was going for a shiny black look in the water to contrast with the ice. I wanted the photo to feel cold and silent.

Fantastic, Nicole! Now there is something I haven't done - made my own preset. I will have to learn how to do that.

I see that Rob's Pixentral upload is 1200 in width so apparently you aren't limited to 800 on the longest side. Good to know...

Of course I love the simplicity of the blue and white hues so I wanted to emphasize that.

I have a similar framed pano of Lake Superior with just all the blues Julie, and I love it. (not my image) This is a beautiful scene with the ice in the lake!

Things I did:

- crop and straighten
- clone sensor spots and bird
- tweak white balance for color
- reduce exposure
- increase blacks
- applied the "punch" preset
- applied split toning for color
- tweaked contrast
- tweaked hue, saturation and luminance
- slight vignette
- had fun :)

The pinks are lovely... I kept seeing that little bit of pink in the original sky and tried to bring that out with my blues, but couldn't.
