I was looking at community courses for Photoshop through local colleges and they are all taught with Windows version. Then there is the numerical difference btwn Mac and Windows.

How different is photoshop in windows vs Mac. Can I take a Windows course if I have a Mac? How different are the versions from one another. Is Photoshop 6 for Windows the same as 4 for Mac?

What's the deal here???? What's the difference?????? Thanks for your help.

There are some differences between version 6 for Windows and version 4 for the Mac. Someone more familiar with these can go into more detail. But version 6 for the Mac will be coming out in just about another month, end of March.

Amazon (UK) quote 3rd March for PSE6 on Mac. I've pre-ordered and their expected delivery date is 10th March (I didn't pay for fast delivery).

On the Mac vs Windows thing, I'm guessing but I would expect the techniques taught to be the same. As a Mac user at home, and Windows at work (and sometimes Linux) I don't usually find much difference between cross-platform programs once you take account of the slightly different user interfaces, and that difference seems to get less each year.

Elke, I do hope someone can give you more than guesses. If you take the course I'd be interested in if you found it worth while - it's unlikely to be a course near me(!) but I've tended to shun classroom courses and I'm wondering if I shouldn't be so negative about them.

The only real difference between the Mac and Windows versions of PSE 6 is the way you organise your photos: Windows uses Organizer (which used to be the stand-alone program, Photoshop Album), the Mac version uses the Bridge, which has a more professional feel to it, in my opinion. Both do a grand job of sorting and viewing your images, of course. There are a few more subtle differences but none of the functionality is different.

Hi Elke

Just make sure that the course you are taking is in fact, for Elements and not the full Photoshop.

Hi Cloud ...

Amazon may now be saying 3rd March but Adobe are still quoting the end of March :)

Whilst the UK site says this...

I am appearing naive or just overly optimistic by preferring to believe that the UK has stock before the US?

I have fingers and toes crossed.

Wendy,

You were right. Amazon UK did let me down. The availability date for PSE6 for Mac came and went and then they e-mailed me to say it world not be available until the beginning of April.

Now they've e-mailed me again to say it won't be deliver until the end of April.

So I've cancelled the order. I'll make do with what I have, which is PSE4 and Gimp.

Well, I had PE6 on pre-order for a long time and they first said ...

"Photoshop Elements 6 (MAC)" [CD-ROM]
Estimated arrival date: 28/03/08 - 04/04/08

Then a few weeks later...

"Photoshop Elements 6 (MAC)" [CD-ROM]
Estimated arrival date: 21/04/08 - 26/04/08

So I'm pretty miffed.

But Yay for demos! Had forgotten to check the adobe site for updates

I'm in the UK. We don't always get the same release dates for products.

Amazon UK quotes £70.98 (that's about $130). So we don't even get similar prices :(

I think I need to update my post. Seems the price of PSE6 for Mac varies somewhat in the UK:

Amazon UK £70.98 ($119.96) free shipping
Apple UK £65.24 ($110.26) (inc £5.30/$9 shipping)
Adobe UK £63.58 ($107.45) (inc £6/$10 shipping)
Adobe download £59.29 ($100.20)

($1.69 = £1.00 assumed, calculated using Adobe's US and UK pre-sales tax prices - actual exchange rate is more like $1.85 = £1.00)

You'd think Adobe's download would be less than having a boxed version, given that there's less packaging and labour involved. But they add on £1.71 for the privilege of not having the CD, and box, etc. Overall you save, but not as much as you would expect by removing the cost of the shipping.

Either way, hopefully I can walk in to my local Apple store any buy it at thier advertised price, less the shipping - that would be about £60 and I get a CD and box.

Is there a difference between PSE UK and USA?
If not, why not order from an American dealer and have it shipped.
Here the price of PSE6 is $90.00 and the upgrade price is $70 on the adobe site.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 & Adobe Premiere Elements 4 (vista) is $125.00 less $30.00 rebate. Net price is $95.99 with free shipping. Amazon

Frank,

No I don't think so. I think they are identical. However, my prices are with UK sales tax (VAT), which is 17.5% and I'd pay this on anything I imported too, plus the extra cost of shipping from the US - which I don't know, but I doubt I could do it for under $10. Take all that in to account and I think the lowest price is comparable with the price in the US.

Interestingly Amazon are not the lowest price in the UK, which is a mystery in itself as they are usually very competitive. It unusual to have a manufacturer under cut a supplier like this.

Seems the upgrade is an option here in the UK too. That might well be the lowest route for me. I'll investigate that.
