scanned slide about 40 years old

does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this photo, It is of my brothers when they were about 8 or 9 years old about 40 years ago. I would like to be able to fix it and give them a copy. Any help would be greatly appreciated

First, can you re-scan and try to get a better image? Or does the slide really have that bright spot in it?

Unless your slide has these colors you should be able to do much better.
It seems as though you scanned through the back of the slide. Looks like the checked shirt is buttoned the wrong way.
As a precaution reset all your enhancements settings on your scanner. Perhaps some adjustments were made earlier and are still in affect.
Also try resetting your preferences on the scanner application.
