View Full Version : Danish characters wrong when printing caption

Not a problem for english speaking writers, but in the danish language we have three characters - last three in the alphabet.
They show up correctly on screen when typing, but PSE3 do not print them correctly.
(From an Adobe Forum I noticed that CS2 have the same problem)

Could someone try replicate this:
In PSE3 Editor > File > File Info:
Enter the following in the Description box:

Danish character: Alt+0230 - æ, Alt+0248 - ø, Alt+0229 - å

Danish capital character: Alt+0198 - Æ, Alt+0216 - Ø, Alt+0197 - Å

(As english writers probably do not have the keyboard for typing these characters, I have chosen the Alt-combination from Windows Character-Map)

File > Print > tick Caption > Print

Print can be a normal print out, or to a PDF printer, I get the same results:
æ = ¾ (Alt+0190)
ø = ¿ (Alt+0191)
å = Œ (Alt+0140)

Æ = ® (Alt+0174)
Ø = ¯ (Alt+0175)
Å = empty space

And now we are at it.
In the File Info > Description box, I can set a new line (new paragraph - had to find the dictionary to get it right).
But when printing with caption ticked, these new paragraphs are gone.

Any ideas of getting round this ?

Hi Klaus

I just tried a couple of them on a photo using the text tool
No luck I'm afraid. I am not surprised because the key combos for the font are the characters I got. Which were the the characters you are getting printed out.

If you are getting the proper display in Elements then possibly you have a printer font issue. Maybe the printer is converting the fonts/keystrokes to something it recognizes. It could be defaulting to certain characters if it doesnt know what the keystroke is.

Tried the text tool on a picture, and it works ok with all danish characters, both on screen, and in print.

But you may be right, that the printer is defaulting to certain characters if it doesn't know what to use.

The good news is - that I just found a way:
If printing picture and caption from PSE3 File Browser - all danish characters print ok.

Now I only need to find out why my "new paragraphs" are missing.

In the File Info > Description-box, they display correctly.
Same in Metadata-pane of File Browser under IPTC > Description.

I borrow three lines from Elements help-file to illustrate:

Welcome to the Adobe® Photoshop® Elements application.
Photoshop Elements offers robust features.
Designed specifically for amateur photographers.

When printing the three lines above as a caption, it show up like this:

Welcome to the Adobe® Photoshop® Elements application. Photoshop Elements offers robust features. Designed specifically for amateur photographers

The "new paragraphs" are gone.

I'm not sure what to say :) I never add captions or do anything with the metadata .. I barely even look at it.

Hopefully someone will be around that uses these features and the can help more.

Sorry.

I never bothered with Caption/Description before, but when I found out that metadata stays with the picture, the idea came to make albums, much like "old fashion" photoalbums, picture and text on a page - but for the pc.

Several programs can make it for you, but not the way I wanted.

I'm sure something will come up.
