I recently chose to write tags to my files and received the message that I did not have enough space to do undo, so I chose to continue without the undo feature. I discovered these strange <filename> _edTMP.jpg duplicates while doing something else later on and didn't immediately figure it to be related to that action. As a matter of fact, trying to figure out what they were and why they were (and still are) there, I added the column to say when the files were created in my Windows pane and sure enough they are all created at the same time. I don't think the date corresponds to the date that I ran my "write tags to files" process. I may have run a backup of the catalog that day though...Hmmmmmm!
Unfortunately, I backed up all my folders before realizing that they were twice the size they should have been. so on the backup I can't separate as easily the duplicates for deletion. because they are all created at the same time.
Anyway, I'm amazed at the lack of information about this. Maybe somebody can help me with an easy way to mass delete all the duplicates from many many folders - we're talking possibly as much as 70 GB of duplicates!! Just searched and found 33,279 files with _edTMP as part of the filename!!
Man, I don't know how I didn't notice this sooner!!

Kelli, I just tried to duplicate your issue in PSE5 and PSE6. I have not experienced what you are describing. What version are you seeing this in? Are you writing new keyword/tag info or are you creating new tags? What I have done is write new keywords, created new tags as jpg, tif, and psd. None have duplicated what you have noted.

Hi Ric,
No, I was writing the tag information to the files... not attaching tags just using the tags already attached. In case the catalog should fail or get corrupt I could re import the pictures and get the tags back. Insurance only. Yet I don't think that is what did it. I think it was during a backup of my catalog that the duplicates appeared and it was using PSE5 at the time. I now am using PSE6 and wrote the tag info using that version- completely different computer.
It is definitely related to PSE as the only files duplicated are the ones in my organizer.
I don't remember if I had any error messages on my back up as it was done back on 1-17-08.

interesting... maybe I did write tags to the files back then????

Kelli, not that familiar with the backup within PSE. I use external backup and use LR as my "Organizer" as such. Sounds like it is something that PSE is programmed to do, much the same as I learned that PSE creates a duplicate of the file opened from within the Organizer for editing, so that you are never really working on the original and if you save it saves by default I believe as an "edited" copy of the original file, and now you have two. That is fine, but when I want to take just that file into the editor to print from the editor and not do anything else, just a habit, mind you, you have to remember to not save as and create a variation of the original. At my age...loose grey matter upstairs...I tend to forget and being a creature of habit all these years...well you get the picture.

Just to let everyone know. I decided to wholesalely delete all 33,279 files that are *_edTMP.* Did a windows search command to find them and am deleting them bypassing the recycle bin. This is my solution to the end result of a problem I'm not sure why happened. It sure frees up a bunch of space on my Hard Drives though! I will be very much more vigilant when doing things like backing up the catalog and writing tags to files. The files left over are actually files with the tags written to them - I tested one to be sure... I hope that they all are the same... can't test them all!!!
