my name is jim farrar and I'm currently taking the digital photog course. I noticed something with photoshop elements 4 when importing raw/ nef photos from my nikon d70s.
I just finished the three sessions on camera raw. I was shooting at the setting on the camera for a compressed 12 bit raw image and a basic jpeg at the same time. When I import the pics from the camera directly into photoshop 4, the nef's are noticibly lighter or more overexposed than the jpegs of the same photo in the downloader and the organizer.
I thought this was just my eyes or screen so I imported the same pictures from the camera into the picture project software from nikon and didn't see any difference in exposure of jpeg and nef. I then had photoshop elements import them from my picture project 1.5 watched folder and lo and behold the jpegs and nefs looked exactly the same the nefs were not over exposed.
I then imported the same pictures from the camera directly in photshop 4 again and lo and behold the nefs were all over exposed compared to the jpegs of the same photo.
what could be happening? Is photoshop 4 correcting something before I even open the raw editor? I'm feeling like I should download in the nikon software then import from a watched folder into photoshop for accuracy.
please try this for your self and let me know that I'm not selectively hallucinating!
