I have installed 4.o on my laptop and my pc a while ago. I have been using my laptop and everything is fine. Today for a change I used my pc and when I edit ...I use raw..the right screen comes up and I fix it. Then I go to Standard edit and tweak it...when I save it I save to TIFF....to my surprise in the organizer the picture comes out totally black and the tiff does not show up. I reinstalled and the same thing happens....Any ideas...I'm extremely frustrated!!

I noticed the same thing with some Tiffs created from my scanner so I'm interested in hearing the fix to this one. I'm guessing that if you save as a PS files (psd) or jpeg then everything is fine?

I was on the phone w/ Adobe for over an hour and they had me do all sorts of trouble shooting. They didn't even know why or how to fix so they are going to more experienced people and getting back to me...Everything else is fine...jpegs and psd files are ok.....

I found some information on black thumbnails on the Adobe forum:

I don't know if it is the same thing or not but it may help :)

If you open the TIFF in PSE (I mean, the Editor) then save it again. Does it should thumbnail in the Organizer ?

Or, if you export the picutre, delete it from the organizer, open it in PSE, save it again, reimport in Organizer.. ?

My point is, PSE creates the thumbnail with the picutres as it saves them. Finding a way to resave the pictures could solve your problems.

Also, I'm on a Mac, I'm not well versed in the Organizer, sorry.

This might sound weird but is your PC memory lower than your laptop?

I remember reading something, somewhere about memory and the ability of Organizer to show (large..file size) pictures. I know its not quite the same and this was for PE3... but something to check.

The only other thing (ok probably not the ONLY other thing :) ) would be, you have some different software running in the background on your pc.. it might not even be "running" it just might have some control over your tiffs, and causing a conflict.

Thank you all for the ideas and suggestions...I will try them..I'm not a computer person, but how do I tell how much memory I have? I'm pretty sure my pc has more than my laptop

I tried all of the suggestions and my tiff thumbnails are black. When I open them in editor they are fine. Also if I save in PSD they show up in the thumbnail. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to saving in PSD as opposed to TIFF?

Other than file size, I don't believe there is any difference (functionally), other than, more "other" programs would likely have support for tiff as opposed to psd.

I think most around here save any working (and final) copies as psd. They only save in another format for specific reasons...printing,email, special requests, things like that.

I appreciate you respose and info...I guess I'll start saving inPSD until this problem is solved

I'd say use the PSD. They're widely recognized, so if you ever have to move your work to another software (Corel Painter, for example), you'll have less trouble opening your layered PSD than perhaps your layered TIFF.

Just a thought.. oh, and a layered PSD is smaller than it's TIFF counterpart (usually)

At the bottom left of your screen click the "Start" button.
Select "Settings" then "Control Panel"

It might help to change the view to detail at this point but is not required.

Find "System" and double click

The "System Properties" screen gives you a bit of information about your system including the memory. For memory look in the "Computer:" section at the "RAM" amount.

The folks at Adobe said they would call me back within a day or two....it has been a week and no news...so my problem still is not solved. It is frustrating...I will get back to them, but feel they should have by now....

First of all, itīs a pleasure to be in this forum. This is my first post. Excuse any English error, since I am from Brazil.

I am using PSE 4.0 for 15 days now. And yesterday I found the same problems. Some of the 300 thumbnails of my gallery simply popped out black in front of my eyes. All 300 files are scanned old photos, saved in TIF format, with LZW compact. All 300dpi. But only a random group of 20 to 30 thumbnail turned to black (fortunately).

I looked in a dozen internet Elements forums, and found out that apparently:

1) This problem exist since version 3 of PSE (I found post from 2003 with the same problems)
2) Occurs only in Windows / PC, even in machines with great hardware
3) Occurs only in TIFF archives, definitively. Apparently because there are several formats of tif under the "TIFF" format. And, for example, in my case, the TIF format used by my HP scanner was not the same format Adobe uses.

Knowing that, I simply opened all my files in PSE Editor and saved it again in TIF (theoretically, now in Adobe TIF) using Automation. And.. "voila", all the bright and clear missing thumbnails returned to me.

So, apparently, it is a bug that Adobe did not have correction until now. Too bad fur us. Until we have a real solution, letīs save our TIFs in Adobe software...

I don't use tiff, but...

See if they are 8 bit vs 16 bit? Perhaps the 16 bit pictures aren't being processed by organizer...

It was possible, troush. But my tiff files are all 8 bit. but thanks for the idea, anyway.
