I want to create a water mark. Something where it appears letters are cut out & then the the background opacity is brought down to give see through appearance. How do I reverse letters so to speak. Meaning the letter A is empty inside a box?

Easiest way is to apply a layer style like Emboss and then the Visibility layer style Hide. That hides the letter but leaves the Embossing which sounds like the effect you want.

Have you tried doing a search for 'watermark'. There's quite a few different ideas for how to go about it. Here's a few to get you started.

http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28403 (not actually entitled watermark but a member tutorial that could be used as a watermark)

Also if you are a subscriber over at PET then there are a couple of videos in the subscriber section on making watermarks.

Tony... I really miss that quick and easy step in CS3. I used hide all of the time. :o

I'd ave to look but isnt it in the layer styles options somewhere?
Edit... I just gave it a try.. if you are in the emboss section of the layer styels, just lower the fill opacity.

Gary... I am not sure what you mean by the fill opacity?
I don't see fill when I am on bevel and emboss?
I want to say I saw something like that and could never find fill?
If I lower the regular opacity and I have added a outer glow to make it show, I loose the glow also.
sorry to sound like a moron but could you explain a little more? :o (slowly)

You have to back to the top (layer styles effects??) the fill is in there.
After I mentioned it I couldn't find it again either.:D

wait... I found fill. it is right under the regular opacity control. I tried it and it worked great.
Thanks a bunch Gary! I am still lost in CS but making myself work there. :p

Kimi: It's right there on the layers palette below Opacity (at least that's where it is in CS2 and I'm sure it's the same in CS3). It reduces the opacity of everything on the layer except an applied style. You can also see it on the styles options when you open it. The Hide style in Elements uses fill opacity to do it although Elements doesn't have a way of controlling it directly (but it understands it). Of course you can also just add the PSE Hide, Show and Ghosted Styles to CS3 if you want too. Ghosted is just 50% Fill Opacity

But don't forget these fill layer styles that Graffi made for PSE:

Gary - it was going to be tomorrow but has got postponed by a week - actually I got it wrong but the write-up that the other person organizing it did in the local paper announcing it got it right :o. I'd be embarrassed to show you the write-up. Makes me sound like a pro!

Gary: If you knew our local paper that isn't exactly a compliment :D. They'll publish anything they can get their hands on! But don't get me started on publishing my pictures - one in particular that I entered into a local competition a few years back appears all over the place with no attribution: calendars, flyers, coupon books, town promotions etc. No big deal as I take pictures for pleasure, not fame or fortune and I'm sure the small print in the competition said that I gave up any rights I might have had once I entered it. Just find it a bit strange that no one ever seems to think of giving the original photographers any credit!

I really add some of my layer style from PSE into CS3? :p
Can you please tell me where to install inside CS?
I wouldn't have to keep going back and forth so much... :)

Kimi: At least in CS2 (and I'm sure CS3 is the same) it's easier than that. In the Styles palette click on the little arrow and you'll get a menu with the option to load styles. Then you just browse to where you have them in Elements and load them as you want them.

I see what you mean. You want the image to show through the cut out part. I would create your logo, making sure that whatever you want to show through is black. (eg the words) Then move it to your image and change the blend mode to lighten or screen. Then photo will show through the black pixels giving a cut out effect.

create your design...
double click on the "T" in your text thumbnail in the layers palette.
you should have the marching ants.
highlight the layer you want to cut thru and hit delete.
