I have been running PSE5.02 on a Vista Ultimate PC with no problems. My suggestion would be to reset the preferences when you click to start PSE. You do this by pressing the Ctrl/Alt/Shift keys at the same time while PSE opens. You have to be quick doing this.

You definitely need the 5.02 patch.

One thought, did you disable your antivirus program when you installed PSE? Sometimes, the antivirus program will make things not work right. If reseting the preferences didn't help, try to reinstall with the antivirus disabled.

When you say that it hangs up on loading the editor tools, does that mean that the Editor doesn't open or does it mean that the editor opens up but the tools don't work. Some tools don't work with 16 bit files but will work with 8 bit.

Hope this helps.

The editor doesn't open, just the bar showing that it is loading
I'll try the resetting preferences, then closing anti virus and re installing.
Thanks.

If you hold the CTRL/ALT/SHIFT as you try to open the editor (click the icon) you should get a little popup that asks if you want to reset the preferences (or something to that effect) with either a yes or no option.. pick yes.
You really have to be quick to hit the buttons all at the same time as clicking to open the editor. If you don't get the popup the timing was off.:)

I've done all those steps and it still doesn't work. I can open the organizer, but when I click on the Edit button either full or quick, the bar comes up and starts moving saying it's loading. Then it stops and says the program is not responding. I'm getting a headache from working with this so many hours.
It's a new computer with Vista.

Shirley,

From what you written, it seems to me that perhaps something got corrupted during the install process (or maybe even during the download of the 5.02 patch.) If it were me, I would uninstall PSE and then do a reinstall.

To uninstall, click the Start button, select Control Panel, and then select Programs and Features. Find PSE in the list and do an uninstall.

Get a fresh download of the patch and install it. If I remember, you don't have to install 5.0 first, just d/l 5.02 and install it. You will need your key number from the 5.0 box.

Hope this works. Keep us posted.

I got a fresh d/l of the patch and installed it. When the E5 logo comes up it says 5.0.2. It also says wizard was interupted before it could be c ompletley installed. Then it starts to Install...... then says window can't complete the extraction the destination file couldn not be found???? What is all this?
I tried the CD with repair and it did that.
E opens a picture comes on the screen, but when I ask for either of the edit tools to open, it starts saying loading tools, then just quits and then it says the E is not responding.
What else can I try? Oh, when I d/l the patch I didn't need to put in the ID #, is there a special folder that should of gone into?
Where is my catalog?
Thanks for any help.

Not sure if this will help but I have run into some strange problems with Vista. I now always right click on the installation icon and choose "run as administrator" . This seems to make a difference sometimes.

Shirley,
Did you disable your antivirus? It also helps to not have any other programs running that can interfere. Things like email programs can do a send and receive which may cause problems during a download.
I would look into the add/remove program in the control panel and see if any versions are left over from prior installs. To get there, click on the start button, select control panel and then click on Programs and Features. If you didn't uninstall prior attempts, then maybe some left over piece is giving you grief.
A long shot, do you have a tablet, like a WACOM, installed? A friend of mine had a problem with an install of Creative Suite and his issues were resolved when he uninstalled the tablet.
Also, go to Adobe's web page, here http://www.adobe.com/go/kb401365 and look at install issues with Vista and PSE 5. Perhaps there is something in there that might help you.
The product key gets in when you register the product.
I know this is frustrating, we all have been there at some time or other. Keep trying and I know you will eventually get things under control

Yes, I disabled my anti virus, it seems I've gotten a few steps further along because now Elements 5 doesn't say "my catalog not responding", I'm able to look at pictures in the organizor. But when I click on Edit I get UNABLE TO CONNECT TO EDITOR APPLICATION.
I've asked for help in several different post because I see there are more people on and maybe someone knows what to do? Thanks for all the replies.
I looked at http:401365 but there is so much there and doesn't seem to address my problem. I've checked to make sure no pieces are left over after uninstall.

Yes I did disable antivirus. There are no versions left that I know of. I have uninstalled in the Add/remove program. Don't know what WACOM is, so I don't have it. I looked at the web page. I called Photoshop this afternoon and they said they could fix it but it would cost $30 for the call. I said no thanks.
She said it should work with Vista as long as I have the 5.02 patch and I do. I asked why it won't download the editor applications she just said she couldn't tell me, she have to check out the computer.
Shirley, so frustrated that I don't know why I even want this program on my computer now.

Shirley,
It sure is frustrating, I know. Hopefully, we can work it out for you.

So let's take this one step at a time. You have Vista, is it 32 bit or 64? To find out hold down the Windows key and tap the Pause/Break key. In the window that opens, under the System section, it should say System type-32 bit. Adobe says 64 bit doesn't work. You should also have a minimum of 512 MB. The system screen will tell you how much you have. You should have 1.5GB of hard drive capacity. To find out your hard drive capacity, right click the Start button and hit explore. Right click your hard drive (usually C) and select properties. The window should tell you how much you have used and how much you have free.
Verify that you have uninstalled any PSE5.0 or 5.02 files files that are in Control Panel/Program features. If they are there, uninstall them.
Next Adobe says to check for Windows updates. Your computer should already be set up for automatic mode, but to check it, open up the control panel again and select Windows updates and see what the screen shows.
You should be logged on as an administrator. To see if you are, once again go to the control panel and select user accounts. The open window should tell you if you are an administrator or not.
Windows Aero has been known to cause problems, especially with systems with more limited resources. To disable this, open the control panel again and double click Personalization. Select Windows color and appearance. Towards the bottom select Open Classic Appearance Properties... and select something other than Windows Aero. Hit apply and exit.
AT this point, I would try to install the 5.02 upgrade. First disable the antivirus. Download the patch to your desktop and run it from there.
Hopefully, this will get you going. If not, I will try to walk you through the other steps that they have listed.
