Hi guy

Just a quick question, whenever I open a file in PSE6 Editor, make changes then Crtl-S to Save it shows the Save As Dialog and you have to save over the old file . After that saving works normally. This happens every time you have a new session of PSE6 so since mine crashes all the time it is getting frustrating.

Any tips?

Thanks so much!
Melissa :)

Melissa,

I do not know if I am misunderstanding your question, but here is my take on this.

If you bring a photo into Photoshop Elements, it is already saved to the hard drive with a location and name. Let us call this photo a. If you make changes in the photo, when you hit Save As, you have two choices:
1. leave name and location as is, then this changed version will overwrite photo a version.
OR
2. change the file name (for example, to photo b) in the Save As Dialog, you can leave the location as is, and hit Save in the dialog. When you do this, you will have two files in that hard drive location, photo a (original) and photo b (edited, Save As version).

In choice #1, if the system crashes before you save the edited version, you will still have photo a on the hard drive but you will have lost the edited version.

Hope that helps.

Hope I did not miss the target on this one.

Melissa-

Are you saying that when you open and edit an existing .psd file that you've previously worked on, and then hit ctrl+s to save, you get the Save As dialog instead? Me too...I don't have 6, but it happens to me in 5 from time to time. I havn't gotten annoyed with it enough to figure out if there's a pattern to it, or look into doing something about it, figuring out why, etc. But every time it happens it does make my wonder why.

But, like I said, not enough to spur me to further action...:o

Sorry ATR - I mean that I'm opening a PSD file as Mrod says below

Hi Mike - that's exactly what I mean, it is wierd in that it happens for each file you open in PSE6...

Ok think I found the solution: Edit\Preferences\Saving Files

On first save was on Ask If Original - I now changed it to Save Over Current File

I always use Ask If Original as I then have the choice of saving as original or renaming and saving

I'm with Kev. I like to have it ask on the first save so that's how I have my preferences set. It only does it on the first save so if you save regularly (which is good practice) it stops asking. Although I have noticed that if you make a lot of changes between saves it will ask again - not a bad idea as you now have an image that is very different from the previous saved version.

I can see the point of it, but I'm used to the way other programs work! :) So that feature just confused and annoyed me :)
