View Full Version : Photorealistic Line Drawing

I have been able to create line drawings from photos but would like to further develop my skills. In Beardworths "Advanced Digital Black & White Photography" book he show an interesting approach. In particular I would like to replicate his technique for creating the "cross hatching" that can be used in shading so as to give the picture an "engraved" look. His technique in Photoshop asks you to use Grayscale in Bitmap mode and use a Halftone Screen. Doe anyone know if this is available in Elements? I can get to bitmap mode but the options don't seem to include a Halftone Screen. Any Help or Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ...
I played around with this for a while but I couldn't come up with a way to get the same effect in Elements :(

In Elements there is a Filter>Sketch>Halftone Pattern... option. It is greyed out if you do the Bitmap thing. But it is available if you just convert to Grayscale and go from there.
Don't know what effect you're after, but it does give halftone dots (be sure the drop-down is on dot, not line or circle) and you can control the size and contrast.

way2close,
Appreciate your idea. As it worked out using "line" on the Halftone Pattern was helpful to what I wanted to do. Also I used the info that Beardsworth gave in his book to create a pattern. I could then use the pattern with the Paint Bucket Tool to fill a selected area with the pattern. (As you probably know you can select either "Foreground" or "Pattern" with the Paint Bucket.)
I started with my image in gray scale and then used the Filter Photocopy which is under Sketch, with settings of 8 for Detail and 40 for Darkness. Am anxious to make a "negative" of this image to use in my printmaking work. I am trying to get the "etched" look that you see in lithographs and woodcuts.
I could send anyone who would like the pattern image I used to make a pattern. (With the image open in Elements you go to "Edit" > Define Pattern and give it the name you want, then click OK. This saves the pattern and it then it will show up in the Paint Bucket pattern selections. Hope this is useful to those wanting to try this. You can take a look at the image in my gallery. http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/gallery/view_img.php?id=28297

Wonderful result. I'll have to put aside some time to work through your instructions.
Glad to have stumbled upon your work. I especially like the windowpane one.

Glad you liked the results. Let me know if you would like the pattern image. I took a look at your gallery and especially liked the close up of the poppy. Would be interested in how you put the copyright watermark in. Is that just a straight text layer with the opacity set at less than 100%? Also, I have more images posted at Picasa. Most are the same but have quite a few others.
If you are interested, the link to them is: http://picasaweb.google.com/20sol20/PrintmakingImages
Have a great day!
