Hello everyone,
I have a question reguarding fully edited pics. When using elements 5.0, I have started using layers. I am currently making all black and white pics with one thing in color. When I am done with my picture, I save it.
If I exit the program and go to my pictures, the picture i edited shows a camera where the pic shold be. Am I saving the picture wrong or something? If I do the same thing and edit without using layers I have no problem. I can exit the program, go to my pictures and the pic I edited is visible. It's not a camera. I must be doing something wrong with saving and I cannot figure it out.
If anyone has any ideas that would be helpful. Like I said earlier this only happens when I use layers. Since this only happens when I use layers, how do I save these pics
Thanks
Josh :D

if you want to save the photo and preserve the layers save as psd file. If you save as a psd no photo will show up in the folder. You can open and edit what you have done. If you save as a jpeg you can no longer edit the photo and when you save it you will see a picture in the folder.

That must be what I am doing wrong. I can still look at the pic and make changes if I want to as well.
Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it!

If you want to you can save both ways. Save the original one as a psd and then do a save as and save as a jpeg if you want to see the photo in the folder along with the psd file. I sometimes do that so I can remember what the photo is. I can't remember what I name most of them so that helps.

Just for clarification, you can still edit the image, however, the layers will no longer be available.
There is a long story behind the inability of Windows to display PSD thumbnails, which started when Adobe omitted the psicon.dll file from its software because of some Windows compatibility issues.
You can read up on some of that in this thread and also find a remedy there:

I should have said you can no longer edit the layers, you can however edit the photo again.

Which leads me to a question: do you typically save a psd version as well as a jpeg version. The psd files are huge though and pretty soon you are going to run out of disk space right?

No I just save Psd files and jpg files that I am currantly working on. Once I am done with them I just save a jpg file and delete the psd. Photos take up space pretty fast so It would be silly to save both types of files. I just save the files I am working on that way.

I usually save all my layers as a tiff or psd file. I figure I can always make a dupe if I need a jpeg later. That way, if I notice something when I go to do a test print, I can easily adjust. My library is kept on an external drive rather than the desktop as well as burned to dvds(I've already had 1 external drive die and was able get everything back from the dvds.)

I always save the psd - I often note something I want to change after I think I'm done with editing. With the psd, I can always go back.
If you are short on space, external hard drives have really come down in price - it's an easy fix for storage problems. EHD's are easy to install/use.
I hate that the psd's show that icon instead of the photo - I think I'll go to that thread and see what they have to say. Thanks for the link.
