Texturizing Images video tutorial

Can anyone please help me with the first couple steps in this video tutorial...Texturizing Images.... I see he ha s a background of white and the layer 1 with the picture...can you tell me how he got to this step..It must have gotten cut off the beginning of my video....

He would have just started off with a new blank file and then added the photo to it.

Thanx Wendy...............I did post a picture but not sure if thats the look it is suppose to have.. It doesnt really look like the owl is imbedded in the cracked paint does it??
