View Full Version : Changing perspective

I'm not sure perspective is the right word, but here is my question. Shooting a building from the ground up gives a broad base and narrow top and a crooked edge. I remember seeing something on this forum about how to correct that and now (of course) I can't find it. Does anyone out there remember where that is? Thanks in advance for your help.

Suzanne,
In PSE 5 there is a filter -Correct Camera Distortion- I just looked in PSE 4 it doesn't have it. It seems at though I have seen a Plug-in for PSE, I will google and try to find.

Suzanne,
PTLens has a plug-in, the demo is a (free ) 10 image trial .

Edit: Doug, could you post the exact URL, please? Can't find what I need there. Thanks!
I'll go there and see if it will work for me.

Hi ..
Try this to correct the narrow top/broad base effect:
Go to the layer palette and then double click on that background layer to change it to an normal layer
Next do Image>Transform>Distort.
When the box comes up pull out the top corners to correct that distortion (you may also need to move in the bottom corners ... and possibly pull the whole image upwards too.
That should corect the perspective now you need to deal with the barrel effect of that crooked edge.
Try it this way:
Get the elliptical marquee and make a circle or oval across the distorted area then I give it a large feather ...
Next I do Filter>Distort>Spherize and use a low minus setting (try about 6 ??)

Hope that helps :)

Wendy’s techniques work like a charm… I use them but before I do I duplicate the background.
Clicking back on the background I increase the canvas size 20 percent relative.
I then turn off the view of the background and click on the duplicate. I make the adjustments like Wendy suggests.
I get a better idea of what I am loosing and if I need to increase the height of the photo with the added canvas.
I can turn the background on an off to get an idea of the changes I’ve made and an added benefit is I may be able to use parts of the original picture to fill in where I transformed the top.
As an example… say both pictures had sky but by correcting the perspective of the top picture I moved the right top node to the left.
I would need to crop or clone unless I could blend part of the original picture below to fill the sky area.

I use PTLens a lot as I find it's better than the PSE5/6 Correct Camera Distortion. And it's only $15. Not only will it do perspective adjustment but it also knows what camera/lens and focal length you're using (from the EXIF data) and does camera/lens specific distortion correction. Works very well for me.

In PSE4, I control t to get the transform tool
view> grid to line it up
then I hold the control key while pulling at the corners
Crop
I did this using that technique - it was simple and quick
Looks like I shortened the building a bit - oops! LOL

All great tricks. I have several buildings that I need to do this with, so I will check out all options. Thanks.
