View Full Version : wow chrome program error, PSE3

After applying the wow chrome effect to a layer and saving it as a PSD, the file fails to open, "cannot complete your request because of a program error. " Tried to rename file in windows, still failed to open. Opened file with JASC but can only save it as jpg. the saved jpg does open with PSE3.
File opened and closed with several layers prior to applying chrome effect. Stopped opening after the chrome effect, have tested it by making only 3 layers and then applying the wow chrome effect, file then fails to open, producing above listed error.
Thoughts and recommendations, please.
Stay well

Hi Johnny ...
... and welcome to the forum :)
I have just tried it out and it works fine for me, no problems at all. Maybe someone else could test it too and see if they can replicate your problem. So does this happen on every file you try to apply it to?

Is there a particular Wow Chrome that does this or does it happen with all of them.
I tried the very first one in the list and on my Win XP machine it loaded OK, after saving and closing the file.

Hi Wendy and Will,
Wow chrome reflection is the one causing the trouble. If I have a background and one layer it is ok. When there are three layers and the effect is applied appears to be the sequence.

OK so I tried it with 4 layers all duplicated from background, is there something else you are doing in this process.
Can you tell us step by step what you're doing so we can see if we can create an identical test.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is maybe some corruption in the Wow Chrome style file?

If it is a corrupt file we can manage that fairly easily. Does seem strange that is happens with one particular style and not the lot.

Will ...
We have a few examples recently where one of the layer style files have become corrupt ... although usually Elements then won't load it :)

Hi Wendy and Will
Here's the sequence
Open file, file is a jpg, 400 KB
Lasso a selection from background
Make a copy of selection on new layer
with background active, create new layer,
on new layer, use marquee elliptical for a selection, fill it, discard layer
On background use the elliptical selection to make a new layer via copy
Apply wow chrome layer style to this elliptical copy layer
Save file as PSD
Close file
Reopen file and the error message appears“could not complete your request because of a program error”
If chrome style is corrupted, what would be best method to correct?
Thanks and stay well,
j

Hi there ...
Does it only do it on this specific image or does it still do it if you use a new file?
Try this File>New>Blank File at 600 x 600 pixels, RGB, white background, select part of it, copy to a new layer (Edit>Copy, Edit>Paste) then apply the layer style to the new layer and save it. What happens then?
If it is indeed a corrupt layer style file ... donlt worry one of us will be able to email it to you.

Hi Wendy,
Using the sequence you suggested with a new file 600x600 230 resolution it saved and opened the file
Using another jpg and using the same sequence, select, edit copy, paste, apply, produced the error message.
I look forward to your thoughts.
Thanks and stay well,

Hi Johnny ...
That happens if you take your jpg, make the selection, Edit>Copy, Edit>Paste and then save (without applying the layer style)?
... another thought is how did you import the images are they from your camera, scanner etc?

Hi Wendy,
opening a jpg that produced the error with the wow chrome layer style and only using the sequence, open, lasso select, edit copy, new layer, edit paste, save, close; opens without the error.
jpgs were imported files from a camera
whatcha thinkin'

Ummmm ....
This one has beat me :(
It can't be a corrupt style because its working OK on something else so it seems to be some conflict between the layer style and the jpg. Beyond that I really don't have a clue ... anyone else any ideas??

Looks like you covered mot things Wendy.
Are you saving the won't open file as jpg or psd? Sorry if I missed it in an earlier post.

Hi Wendy,
Another few bits to report. When the layer style is applied, the image in the photo bin goes completely white. This going to white only happens with the wow chrome texture and wow chrome reflective choices. The other wow choices show the image in the bin with the style applied. The image in the viewing window shows the correct style applied. The views of the layers show their proper images.
A PSD ile that fails to open and produces the error will open if requested to open as reading composite data.
Look forward to your further musings.
Stay well,
J

Johnny ...
Try deleting the prefs file:
To do that close down Elements then click on the Editor start up icon and quickly hold down the Control, Alt and Shift keys (If you are a Mac user Apple, Alt and Shift). Continue to hold down all three keys until you get a screen asking if you want to delete Settings ... just say Yes.
Lets see if that helps :)

Hi Wendy,
Well the reset of the preferences worked.
Loaded a file, made selection, created new layer, applied layer style, saved as PSD and it opened. Was also able to open prior files that produced the error.
What's interesting is that earlier today, I tried a rename of the preference files so that a new one would be built, that failed to resolve the problem.
Thanks and stay well
