Is it possible in Elements 3 or 5 to change a photo so that you have only a selected item visible and the rest transparent so you can use the selected item in a slide show and have it move across another layer?
Thank you

Pat-Gail,
Elements can certainly change part of an image to transparency, and can certainly save the image in a format that supports transparency (PSD, TIF, PNG, GIF).
I do not know of a way, though, to create a slide show in Elements which has one image sailing past another - Elements' slide shows simply have one image replace the previous, using the transition of your choice. And when you have an image with transparency, you have to assign a solid color to be displayed in the slide show.
So IF you have another program which handles transparent images in a slide show the way you describe, then you can certainly use Elements to prepare the image... but Elements won't make the slide show the way you describe.

Interesting! How do you make just part of a photo transparent?:)

I've never tried it but in principle you should be able to do it in the slideshow program I have (Proshow Gold) as it supports transparency. Like Byron says though you'd have to save the images as a psd, png, gif or tiff as those formats are the ones that support transparency. I'm sure there are other ways to do it - Flash animation for example and possibly Premier Elements although I haven't used it.
To make part of an image transparent you just delete it - as long as you have a transparent background and save it in one of the above formats it will stay transparent (as long as the viewer you're using supports transparency)

Thank you Tony. I am using ProShow Gold 3.2 to create the slide show but I wanted a transparent slide to pan across another slide. I will try changing the image to another format and see if I can get it to work.
