View Full Version : Where to put PSE6

I've realised that the time has come to get PSE6, so I thought I'd start by trying it out. But I have one itsy bitsy problem. By default programs go to my C:/ drive, but whoever built my computer split my HD so that the C:/ drive has only 10gb (& is nearly full) with the bulk of space on the D:/ drive. Can I put PSE6 on the D:/ drive, or for that matter on my EHD or G:/ drive (which is my old HD which got put in to my new computer & from which I then moved everything off to my new HD)?

Hi Bayla,
Yes, you can do that. It'll take up some space on C:, but you can put the main program files where you want. I probably wouldn't put them on an EHD though, simply because the interface is normally slower than an internal drive, unless it is very new, and using eSATA.

Nick ..
I didn't think that you could install Elements on an external drive ?? ... I know that you can keep your images on one but I thought that Elements itself couldn't be ??

Hi Wendy,
Oh. That's odd. I don't see why it shouldn't work. I don't think it's a very sensible thing to do, partly because of the speed issue, and partly because the application wouldn't be available unless the EHD was plugged in and switched on.
You'd also run into trouble if the drive letter assigned to your your EHD changed.
So the idea gets worse and worse the more I think about it. :)
But I think it would work in principle. I'm not motivated enough to risk messing up my Elements installations to try it , but I'll try a more minor app and see. Perhaps I'm forgetting something.

Nick & Wendy,
Thanks for the advice. I noticed that my EHD changed letter last week! It happened after my friend's son attached a pen drive whilst my EHD was unplugged - it took on the letter of my EHD and even though it was taken out after about 25 mins., the next time I plugged in the EHD it became the next letter!
Anyway, the trial version of PSE6 is installed on my G:/ drive (my old HD from my old computer) and so far so good.....

I have a high letter for my EHD to avoid that thumbdrive problem.
You can assign a locked letter to your EHD though.
Right click My Computer and pick Manage
Pick Disk Management
Right Click on your EHD (you will have to tell by the current letter or drive size) and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths... Pick a letter from there.
That should stop it from further wandering.:D

When I installed my EHD, it did the same thing - switched the drive the USB cord I have installed to plug my camera into.
That's when I changed my EHD's letter to Z - can't get any farther from the fray than that. :D
