super-newbie here...

With my trusty copy of "The Missing Manual" in hand, I opened a test photo and selected layer>new>layer twice to create 2 layers. I see both layer 1 & 2, but they are blank or rather have a grey grid. I also have a background complete with the image of my photo. I have no specific intention with these layers but to practice and goof around with each and see the results of my actions.

Problem: with layer 1 active, I went to open the "convert to black and white", but was stopped because the active layer is empty.

Question: how do I fill a layer so I can begin?

Hi Kevan,

If you want to fill a blank layer with color, from the menu: Edit > Fill Layer

If you want to practice doing different effects on a duplicate of your background photo, drag the background layer to the Create New Layer icon and then perform the Convert to b&w on that layer.

I tried, but I can't seem to drag the background image. I see there's a little lock symbol associated. Could it be something with the phot file?

Again thanks

Hi Kevan

Your photo is likely fine. The background layer is automatically locked when you open it.
You should be able to drag it to the new layer icon at the top of the layer pallet (I think left most icon) or with the background layer active press CTRL-J
That should make a copy of it.:)
